It does look like a yucca (there's a number of species), but there are other plants that look similar. I have one that overspray from weed killer apparently killed it off, but 2 yrs later it re-sprouted. They're tough.

It is most likely Yucca filamentosa, Adam's Needle. The first picture shows a finished bloom stalk which is the cause of that rosette's death. After blooming they send up new growth from the root crown.

Hi Christopher. I have to disagree with your ID of Yucca filamentosa, I have no idea what but if the flower stalk brought about the death of the rosette, it can't be a Yucca. Yucca are not monocarpic.

It appears something has died and has flowered. No idea as to what, though

Or maybe, the ID is good, but your rational for the dead flower stalk is wrong.

I'd agree w/Christopher -- the old flower stalk & the dead rosette on the bottom of it is typical yucca. It's true that they are not monocarpic because the tuber-root itself doesn't die, just that particular rosette that flowered -- the tuber can have numerous rosettes at once. My yucca filamentosas have gradually moved slightly sideways as rosettes bloom & die and adjacent ones are growing from the spreading tuber-root.

Y. filamentosa is not a spp I am familiar with and a quick check on stockists' sites (UK) indicated a plant that appeared to grow in the same sort of form (albeit a lot shorter) as Y. brevifolia and Y. elephantipes, both of which I am familiar with. Not one mentioned the fact that the rosette died after flowering.

It could be Y. rupicola that is indigenous to the Central Texas area. I think I see a twist in the leaves. They also will "die back during times of stress and for many other reasons only to reappear again. They are a green low growing yucca but the blooms can be 8' tall and lodge over. They like limestone areas and will put up with shade.
