Can we see the whole space ? Ilve the look of the cabinets and not 90s to me at all. Is the flooring just in the kitchen? I do not like the backspalsh with the counters for sure .Post pic of the whole space along with some idea of what your style is .

The flooring is just in the kitchen.

This is the flooring exiting the kitchen. It opens up on one side to hallway/stairway and on the other to dining/living room

Are those cabinets really from the 90s? If so, whoever did that kitchen was able to pick a timeless cabinet that does NOT scream dated-90s-kitchen.

I think replacing the counters with something white will brighten out up and breakup the wall of brown-brown-brown. The backsplash can also be light colored, or you can turn it into something that pops with color.

For flooring, I would see if you can match the rest of the flooring, or if the floor brown and cabinet brown are too similar, then go with a different floor color so together. Maybe a dark grey tile color to keep on the same darker-spectrum as the rest of the flooring.

Looks like a great kitchen to me. If you want it to look like the gazillion white and gray kitchens that will be so dated in another 5-10 years, paint the cabs white or light gray. If you can find a tone of gray that goes with your backsplash, use that. Otherwise, replace your backsplash with something similar in grayish stone or marble. Ditto the floor.

You'll spend a ton of money have replaced a nice '90s kitchen with a generic '20s kitchen.

I mean seriously. I recently when apartment hunting with my son. Every single kitchen looked the same and they looked the same as the kitchens HGTV features. It looks great the first time you see it, but after a while, it's just all the same.

The cabs look to be in good condition - if it were me, I would change the floor - if it can be the same as the rest of the house, that's ideal for flow. But for sure I would not change the flooring if I was going to totally re-do the space within the next 5 or so years - so depends on your priorities for the home. If a gut job is in your future, I would look for cosmetic changes for the floor like rugs and addressing the grout.

I would also change the backsplash to something low key that doesn't fight the countertop so much (something uber simple like a creamy subway tile)

Since you just bought the place, I would suggest living there for a while to get a feel for the place before making changes if you can. I love the cabinets, not huge on the backsplash or floor... but you might find after living there a bit what you want to do to make the kitchen flow with the rest of the house instead of popping off a fix early on.

I would change the backsplash and countertop. I think the cabinets are great. The floor doesn't even bother me too much, but I am in the minority of people who like tile on a kitchen floor. Unless you can replicate the same flooring in the kitchen as what is on the rest of the first floor, to me it wouldn't be worth the trouble. If you don't change the floor, at least replace the transition piece (in the doorway) shown in your last picture. That is terrible. Wood to match the floors would be an improvement or just more tile if you have spare pieces. Have you tried deep cleaning the tile? The grout may be lighter when clean.

Those cabinets are gorgeous! Definitely agree with just replacing counters/backsplash, maybe floor.

If you're keeping the counters, then I would pick up a bunch of backsplash samples and find a combo that works next to the counter. Here are some flooring ideas:

IMO you will get a much fresher look if you spend on new counters rather than the floor. The monochromatic look of the counter color with the wood tone is not ideal. You'll probably have an easier time with the backsplash if you do so. +1 for loving your timeless cabinets.

I agree with those who say change the backsplash and counter.

The floor does not bother me.
