Chisue it is oak. It has a label on the bottom from the Larkin company. The company was in Buffalo NY. They sold soap and each box of soap had a coupon in it, save enough coupons and you could get a piece of furniture at no cost. I have a desk my grandmother got from there around 1900.

You probably know this, but the first owner got that table saving the coupons from the purchase of Larkin soap. Table is a ten. When first married and short on money, I furnished the house with turn of the century oak...round pedestal table, pressed back chairs, case goods. It was a fun time. That was in the early 70's when 19th century oak had fallen out of favor and was put on the curb. The things I picked up over the years that way and auction houses...amazing finds.

A correction: Larkin did not market arts and craft style furniture.

Wiiliam Morris and Gustav Stickley would be examples of Arts and Crafts movement.

I have 2 pieces that belonged to my grandmother (Duncan Phyffe style, so 1930s-40s, I think) - a side chair that she used at her desk, and a side table with flaking finish. Estimates to do the work were too pricey, but I haven't summoned the courage to tackle it myself.

I think the only thing I ever redeemed for coupons is a little wood and metal butter dish from (I think) Land 'O Lakes Butter. It's still in kitchen use, now holding Kirkland's butter "90% from grass fed cows".

I remember that my mother saved up Betty Crocker coupons and got some pretty Haviland (or look-alike) dinnerware, and then a set of silverplate table settings for my sister when she married.

The Larkin furniture was founded in 1875 and wwent out of business in 1942. That time period covered a lot of styles including Arts and Crafts.

Your lovely desk only cost 6 coupons, i read!! And I think a coupon came with a $10 box of soap. Times were different back in 1901!

My MIL had an Oak wood table from 1920’s,. About 10 yrs ago got it refinished. Though beautiful, I am wondering if refinishing and removing the patina would have caused it to devaluate.

Likestonehomes, sadly our furniture from the 20s and 30s tends to not be valuable in the way that something from the 1700s or 1800s might be, so refinishing really doesn't make a difference (AFAIK) - unless it is a genuine Stickley, or one of the other top designer/maker names that were groundbreaking or coveted for their craftsmanship.

Value wise it is hard to know what the future holds. There wont be much in the way of 20th century furniture that will warrant the careful care of their patina. I don't personally value old dirt but that is just me. I worked for a furniture refinisher when I lived in the SF bay area.

I am really not interested in the dollar value of the table. It has a family history and the finish was in terrible condition. I just wanted it to look nice without needing a tablecloth.

I really like it! Green chairs were a GREAT choice!

I remember green stamps. My mom used to let me put the stamps in the book. Also laundry detergent that had a towel in the box.
