They are about a half inch in length, does this help you identify my tree‘s infestation?

Also interesting to note, after I knocked a couple out of the tree bark, they both had an “instinct“ to go back to the tree and start climbing up the bark.

Fungus beetle is the consensus. These particular beetles are not damaging your tree. Whatever is causing fungus or mold under the bark is attracting them. If your area has wet, humid summers, this may be normal. Does your tree have other undesirable symptoms? Is it a very old tree?

I agree that these critters are a symptom and not a cause. Whatever is causing the loose bark is the real cause.
