I agree that the color should continue up to the ceiling. Here are two rough examples, one trying to look gray and the other attempting to approximate the wall color in your dining room.

Curious as to why you used that dark wall color in the kitchen and adjoining room . You have nothing else that color anywhere in those pics. Get rid of the dark wall color. You need a color palette for all the rooms since the space is open. You don’t need to define the kitchen with color. We know it’s a kitchen. You are on the right track with wanting to paint the wood, I would do it the same color as the trim. It’s a fabulous space and your furniture is great, you just need a couple rugs and a new wall color to pull it all together.

How about mixing it up? You might do the cabinets in the color, or a cut version, of the kitchen walls and the fireplace in the same white as your kitchen cabinetry.

I second decoenthusiaste post. Walls below are SW Alabaster, bookshelves are Pure White, Delft and Dark Night (though test all colors in your house first). Not suggesting you move the TV above fireplace but SW sample room was similar enough to yours and easier to edit.

I want to give you an update on my Great Room redo. I still want to switch out the ceiling fan for a chandelier. Thank you for all of your suggestions.
