How much is too much?...

Can you have a bold pattern curtain and an accent wall?I just built a floating, double corner desk (pulled the design out of my butt and did the best I could)...still working on triple bookcases which will be white. I've included pics of both my desk...bookcases drawn in (horribly mind you)...and a picture of my curtains in comments. This office will be our military room with all the stuff my husband and I have accumulated during both of our careers...lots of things on the walls. (Walls are currently light grey). With all of this said...what will work with my curtains? I was thinking maybe a differnt, solid color just behind bookcases? Should I do a large pattern on the whole wall? Maybe make the whole wall a differnt, solid color different than rest of room? Any ideas would be so great. Thank you!

Great room & neat desk design. Assuming the ’stuff’ you’ve each accumulated will be very colorful items - badges, ribbons, insignias, photos, pieces of hardware depending on the career fields each of you were in. IMO, those items on display will create an accent wall so I would opt for a calm background & let them be the star. I’d have the same solid color on all walls. The orange chairs also create another pop of color. I do question the drapes. The large scale pattern is ok but there isn’t enough space for drape to stack on wall on that desk end by the window. That end will always be an issue even with drapes closed. I can’t think of a different window treatment that wouldn’t cover some of the glass except for a shade mounted at ceiling height across wall outside window bay. But, that’s a very long window so it would likely need to be multiple shades & I don’t know if they’d make one header that long for all 2 or 3 shades needed.

I think a solid color, even a bold one would be fine. A pattern seems like it would detract from the special things that you would like to display on the wall, let those be the shining star

@KW Hi! Thank you for your comments! I actually included a cut out on the desk to accommodate the curtains...12 inches out from window frame (see pic). There are 4 panels that cover the window. I think they look better in person. As for the orange chairs...I hate them. Lol they do not go with our Air Force theme. Not sure what to replace them with. And I totly agree...let our military stuff stand out. Thanks again.

@Rebekah Gibbs thank you for your comments. You're right, we should really let our military stuff shine.

I think a dark blue or charcoal on the back wall/bookcases would look great. Add some nice neutral office chairs.

Maybe consider a new light fixture, or more modern looking fan

@Rebekah Gibbs Absolutely!! It's on the list. I HATE this fan/light. Sooo dated.

@Rebekah Gibbs I like the blue...more aligned with Air Force. So in your second pic, the wall has shiplap . I am torn of that's going to go out of style or if it's considered another pattern. 🤔

@Kanga Very clever! A cutout for the drape! You’re right that works great & solves the issue. Now, just need a comfy pillow for that cute doggie in the window. Yeah USAF!! My DH had a 21 year career in it.

PS. That is a doggie and not a long haired cat?

@KW PNW Z8 Thanks! Thank you to your DH and you for your service. It's hard being the spouse. I was active duty years ago and now I work for the DoD as a civilian, but for 7 years I was a SAHM. It's a long hair cat. He is the coolest. And yes...I was thinking to put a cushion there.

@Kanga Yes, being the ’trailing spouse’ was challenging on the career front though DH specialized career field limited relocation moves towards the end. Fortunately, his second career, in a related field for him, enabled me to utilize my prior experience to my great career advantage! A cat!, Too funny.😆 I saw dog body but had to take another look & couldn’t reconcile the set of ears on head as doggie. That looks like one very large cat!

PS - I like the orange office chairs a lot & would nix the "nice neutral office chairs".

Kanga I think shiplap is trendy for sure but also looks very nice and doesn’t necessarily date your home. However I mostly posted the photo for the color scheme

I like accent walls to be those that have no other redeeming architectural features. Your window and shelves will provide the interest without adding an accent color.

@decoenthusiaste that makes sense. I was worried that the wall on each side of the bookcases would be too plain/bare. But I see your point. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

@Kanga You could hang art / framed enlarged photos on each side of bookcase if it looks bare once all set up.

Thanks to both of you for your service!

I would pullout all the items you plan on displaying and find the perfect color for the background. Then paint that whole wall and the bookcases in that finish.

    Good luck!
