Bird poop caterpillar. If you only have 1 you might let it be for awhile unless your tree is small. It turns into a giant swallowtail or Mothra. I don't remember

Thank you Steve. I plucked them off. I'm all for supporting local wildlife, but my trees are small and there were several on each one.

 Put a small  chicken wire fence to keep rabbits and squirrels  from  eating the young trunks of the rest of yot citrus trees even though I'm no expert

Giant Swallowtail caterpillar. Turns into the Giant swallowtail butterfly. I leave them on my citrus trees. They are beautiful when they turn into the butterfly. They don't do much damage to the tree.

Yup, swallowtails. Very fun caterpillars--as they mature they get weirder and weirder looking.

Perhaps next year if my trees are bigger I'll let a couple of them stay. I'm all about supporting butterflies, but those caterpillars looked like they could eat a bunch, and I had a bunch of them on fairly young trees.

I had a tiny grapefruit defoliated by ONE once. I understand. :)

They are beautiful CarolB. And I am not opposed to supporting them in the future. But my trees are small babies and after one day of the caterpillars' lives I saw chomped leaves everywhere. When my trees are bigger ;).
