There is a wide range of what people consider to be taupe, but in general it is a good neutral that is neither beige nor gray, so IMO there is nothing wrong with it. I also agree with @Lyn Nielson. I never got on the gray bandwagon, so now I don't have to get off it when beige comes back. And that's not to diss gray - some people like it, and have always liked it. In that case, they don't need to change it either. Nothing exists in a vacuum. It's more important that everything is working togther for an attractive end result.

It isn’t the colors that are the trends, it’s how they’re used. There will always be beautifully designed rooms in every color, and those same colors could look awful in other rooms.

No color will ever be ”out” if done well.

If taupe, gray and beige were thrown to the winds, with what would we choose to replace them?

The very best of those three is they are not just flat, toneless colors. Each has a variety of undertones which always will keep them part of a scheme.
