Fireplace/mantle dimension help

Hello,

I needed some help on dimensions- not good at this LOL. We are designing a great room as part of our new build. Out great room size is 17'-3'' X 16'-4''. The wall that our linear fireplace will be on (looking at gas/electric) is 16'-4''. We are also looking to place windows on either side of the fireplace. We like a more modern/clean line look, light and airy. Want the mantle to be able to hold some decor pieces, so not too narrow (maybe 6-7'')? Likely will place a TV above, but not sure yet. Any recommendations for dimensions of fireplace/mantle and windows that would not overpower the space but still be a focal point?

Without pics of the plans there can not be help. I hate TVs above FPS So post a floor plan for sure. I really dislike the name great room for a space that is really just living room , a great room was IMO always s apce where you had both LR and dining room . So I need to see the floor plan . As for the windows where is your architect in thta decision.

Hi patricia, thanks! i actually hate tv above fireplace as well but its a compromise with my hubby. i was just looking for a general rule of thumb for dimension that was proportionate to the room size. appreciate your input. thanks

amwall - look into the "golden ratio", it helps for planning proportions of things. The actual ratio is 1.618. So, for example, if the fireplace area was 88", with two proportional areas on each side of 54", that would equal 54+88+54=196"; and the ratio between the smaller and wider pieces would each be 88/54=1.62. Your eye would find this very pleasing proportionally, that's the magic. Another option would be if the fireplace area was 84 ", then the two proportional areas on each side would be about 56". 56"+84"+56"=196"=16' 4". 84/56=1.5, which is less than ideal but close. Just play around with those ranges of numbers. :)

Sorry but IMO the ceiling height and room size are all wrong either the ceiling needs to come down or the room needs to be much bigger . A 16' FP in this sapce will be horrible IMO so keep the FP at human height nothing soaring to the roof . So as mentioned above but we really need to see the plans Tell hubby we all think the TV above the FP is wrong and BTW if you go with the TV mount above then you cannot enjoy yhe fire and the tV at the same time . This is why when I design homes the TV is in the FR with not FP and the FP is in the LR with no TV .

@Patricia Colwell Consulting the fireplace will be placed on the wall that is 16' 8'' it will not be the actual size of the entire wall. i don't think i specified ceiling heights in my post so unsure what you are referring to but they will be 10 ft.
