Help! Need ideas

Hi there. Wr live in a 1977 manufactured home and are trying to update a few things. My hubby ripped out this area here that used to be a funky shelf with glass cases on both sides. He left the bottom part, built it up and for now we have a peice of painted black plywood on top🄓. He also built this light box above to cover the holes in the roof where the shelves were ripped out and give some more light. Anyway... this bar we aren't sure what to do with. Rip it out and fix the floors-put a new island in its place? Repaint the bottom and get a nice top for it? Is it an eyesore? Thoughts ?

A floor plan would be helpful here to understand how this space should best be used. Could you post a rough sketch with dimensions? Do you have a dining space?

I actually think the island has a lot of potential. And a lot of character.

There are other things I’d change to enhance the space.

    Tell us,

    What’s this space used for?
    It looks confused 🫣

    What’s your budget?

    What are your goals?

    I think paint.
    New countertop for the island.
    New lighting.
    New ceiling.
And window treatments is where I would start.
    Look at the difference!

Our layout is confused and strange. From the picture I took is at the front door and you end up in the living room. Behind this "island" was the dining room but I turned it into a kids playroom. The kitchen connects to the playroom. The weird thing is, there is another sliding door right next to the front door and that's where we have our dining room set up. There is a little wall as you can see that connects to the "island. I made the other side a chalk board wall as it's in the kitchen.

I think we'd love to change the lighting but we don't know where tk find panels to replace these? Does anyone know where you can purchase the panels for older manufactured homes? Our budget for this project is about $1500. Not wanting to put a lot of money into this but we need some kind of flow or something and I feel like this space is weird. But we love having the countertop space as the kitchen is minimal.

For a countertop, you might consider butcher block and investigate Waterlox to seal it.

I don't mind the lightbox your husband built, at all. It probably gives a good amount of light and you probably need that.

I would paint the dark "frames" around the green doors in your cabinet. I like that color green, and would just finish it off so all of it is green. HU-XXXXX10 has some good ideas, but I'd skip doing the ceiling as i think it looks fine and functional at the moment, and use the money on countertop, paint, and window treatment.

Thank you for the floor plan sketch. Since you have a dining room and you need extra counter space, Mrs. S has great ideas on how best to spend your money. It’s the perfect spot for a playroom.

I will post an updated picture once I get it painted and the new top!

Here is an updated picture of the new white! My hubby is fixing one of the doors my little one broke the handle out of. We will be relaminating our kitchen tops in the next year so I want to make this top match the eventual kitchens.Ā  Do you think white with the grey veins through it( quartz look alike) would be too much whitewhite? Thays the color were going for in the kitchen. My mom thinks qe should reverse the colors. So grey with white veins through it?

Many do reverse the pattern for an island, but, personally, I prefer them all alike. You might want to look at either Formica, or Wilsonart laminate in the calacatta Marble pattern. It is gorgeous.
