I think I agree but it is hard to know without seeing the house and all the exterior finishes . You need to have some one out to help not send a floor plan and expect an answer . I think you need to post an actul pic of the house exterior showing all finishes . BTW I like wood decking to look like the flooring inside . I find so much of that deck not really useable at 6' wide so what are you planning for how to use it.

On the right side of the "bay" it makes sense, as that is just an oversized walkway. But on the left side that appears to be a more usable space, so the orientation you sketched and conflicts with the right side pattern is not working. I would first define the "spaces" that are usable, then lay out a deck footprint based on those, and limit odd angles (unless the concept of the entire house is befitting those). The decking pattern should eminate from that, and the structure will follow the decking pattern.

But, with limited info, here's how I see an initial setup:

I need to have a lot more info and IMO a deck needs to be planned for how it will beused not just slapped on .I need pictures of the house the lot those are the things that drive the exterior planning.I have deck all around my house and every area has a pupose except for one walkway on the West side that joins all the deck that surrounds the house . We have a pool, a huge seating space an outdoor kitchen a dining space large enough to seat 20 the east side for bike storage , pool stuff and the walkways to the pool from outsude. My thought is design the deck for how you will use the spaces then worry about the layout of the flooring.

Go in one direction, I would do something like this, the outer border is optional.

Yes, the pictures do change things. I'm not sure why the proposed porch footprint does not follow the roof layout - that would be very strange - so eliminate those odd angles. This would be a much better deck layout for a front porch:

Thanks for the visual. Did you see 3onthetree's suggestion so it follows the roofline, not the posts. The porch would all be undercover. I hadn't realized there is a triangle exposed to weather. We're planning on wrapping those posts after the porch is on (a few feet), in a rock that matches our fireplace. I get why it was suggested to follow the roof and it's a crazy design that it doesn't, but with it cut in like the above suggesstion, I wonder if it'd look strange. I like how your design looks but what about a section not covered?

Why wasn't this porch built originally? and what are you planning to do with it -- just decor, or do you want to sit out there? will there be a railing? are you hearing the caveats to the size?

It is a front porch, and typically those are not more than a coupe chairs. And you don't want to block your front door. You can see the ledger boards, with flashing, already installed, and their locations are based on the deck being under the roof, at least against the house.

I don't see how anyone can think cutting from point A to B outside the roof overhang would not be very odd here. And the original design even had more undeserved angles, the hexagon looking extension beyond the columns where the stairs are.

By the time I saw your pictures it was already too late. I just followed the outline of your drawing to show you how I would do the decking.

Your deck builder will have to follow the outline of your roof as @3onthetree suggested in his sketch so it will look something like this.

That said I think this wraparound porch was an afterthought.

The porch was not part of the house plan. It is new construction and the home owners responsibility to build the porch front & back. Our framer had intended to come back and build the decks which is why he installed the ledger board so it would be easier. He has since not responded to calls to come back and even provide an estimate. Have asked several others for estimates but after they get the diagram/design of the porch, have declined to proceed and have not even returned calls.

We do plan on having a swing perhaps at the back where the porch touches the gargae plus some chairs. We have quite an amazing view and acrage so would utilize some seating around that space.

Try to find someone specializing in deck building... They will get this right.
