With the window grids and decor, it appears yours is a traditional style house and doesn't seem like this space is a flexible space - for that think tall, airy, open loft warehouse condo conversions where furniture and layout is flexible - so here a symmetrical lighting grid would not land on your defined spaces where you need it. I would consider a couple recessed accent lights over the fireplace, a hanging light over the dining table, and better placement/proportionally sized floor and table lamps. Maybe a wall sconce if you have furniture against a wall (out of the pic perspective).

I agree, put in a dining fixture to give that space its own home. put a directional recessed over the fireplace. Nine would be like a space ship, way too much especially with low ceilings. 6 your going to end up with runway strips. you will be amazed at how much a chandelier will bring light and definition to the rooms.
