Roman plaster over hardiebacker?

Remodeling my home and would like to choose the fireplace finish after the kitchen is installed if possible. Undecided between porcelain slab (marble look) or Roman clay / plaster.

My GC says porcelain slab needs hardiebacker but choosing a painted or plaster finish over that might not be possible.

Anyone here have experience with roman plaster or any type of plaster over hardiebacker (cementboard)?

the fireplace itself is in a brick firebox because it was wood burning but im putting in a gas insert. the new framing to make the shape more modern is 2x4s. hardiebacker is to support the weight of a porcelain slab i believe?

do you know if i can have it plastered later or if plaster can only go over drywall?

Id look into Micro cements. Very compatible with Cement and hardiebackers as well as fire ratedf areas. 'Can get the same results as plaster and its more durable.
