Help with Kitchen Design!

last modified: 4 years ago

Need help selecting from the below kitchen designs. Option B includes opening a window to the left for symmetry in the kitchen. Please ignore the hood in both renderings as we plan on going with a box hood cover in both scenarios. Both scenarios will also include an island.

OPTION A

OPTION B

Thanks!

Question: Will the sink be on the island? What are the dimensions of this space? Where are the fridge and ovens installed in Option B? I love all of the drawer bases and sweeping views the windows provide!

SInk will be in the waterfall island which is not displayed here. Dimensions of this kitchen is 21 by 12 ft. Fridge and over are placed in exact same spot as Option A. Only difference between OPTION A & B is the new window to the left for symmetry.

Well, the window isn't the "only difference" adding that window will cause you to lose a lot of cabinet space by losing those uppers. So I guess it depends on how important that storage is to you.

Have you thought about whether you will have enough cabinets if you add a window? It depends on how much stuff you have. Some people keep enough food for the apocalypse and some people have every sort of kitchen appliance on the market. So whether you would have enough cabinets depends on how you outfit your kitchen and how much food you keep. I don't think there's anything wrong with Option B. Symmetry does appeal to some people, but it's not really necessary. I think a kitchen needs to be practical above all. I like to have a cabinet for dishes right over the dishwasher because that makes it easy to unload. It's not clear to me where the sink is in either of these renderings.

Yup agreed. We have a lot of lower cabinet drawers, and a pantry to the left of the fridge (not pictured here)...So I'm not too worried about storage. So I guess, Ignoring storage, which option would you go with?

What kind of view do you have out the window? If it's a gorgeous view worth having two windows then go for another window. If not, I'd prefer the cabs. :-)

Gotcha thanks, Its a street view for street in front of our house.

@kandrewspa I just uploaded an aerial view of the kitchen to give you a sense of dimensions and where things are located. We have a lot of lower cabinet drawers, and a pantry to the left of the fridge (not pictured here)...So I'm not too worried about storage. So storage aside, which option would you go with?

Then it depends on how attractive your street view is whether you want another window. Also, how is another window going to look on the front of your house? Can you post a picture of the front? I think we have a lot more leeway for making exterior changes on the back. On the front this could either look really wrong or great. If it's great, and you love the view, then question answered.

Can't pick without seeing the site, what the views are, what orientation and what type of sunlight/glare you get in the space. If window shades are going to be down most of the day due to glare and then at night due to privacy, then I would skip the extra window. I also like having the cabinets on either side of the range, because that is where I like to store oil, vinegars, salt, pepper, etc that I used for cooking, but you might arrange your kitchen differently.
