Fireplace help please!

Here’s is the fireplace in my 1980 California single story tract home. The house was a rental for many years and I have decided to move in. The small kitchen is in the same area and is currently getting new ivory cabinets with Cambria Inverness frost countertops. Walls are SW accessible beige. All ideas are welcome! Thank you!
