Are you just having trouble imaging patterned carpet in the hallway and bedrooms after having a solid for so long? Is there wood flooring underneath the carpet? What flooring is in the foyer? It would be really helpful to see some photos of your actual space. 😉

You can have a runner on the stairs stop at the top of the stairs and not continue into the upstairs hallway. There's also no reason why you can't have something different on the stairs than what you have in your bedroom. There are certain kinds of carpet that hold up better on stairs. Stairs get much more use than carpet in a bedroom. I would definitely not get as light a color as you have now, but after 20 years, nothing is going to look good. If you live in an area where you have carpet stores, visit them and look at what they have. Ask them what they would recommend for stairs in particular and bring sample boards home. Keep in mind the colors found in adjacent rooms and the style of your furnishings.

I did go to some stores today and talk w some salespeople..I like the idea of a patterned carpet on my front staircase and then maybe something more solid for the rest. I just think it would look too busy everywhere else/I’d get sick of it. Also, too hard to match with all of the rooms. Thanks for your help!

It’s important that the colors of both the runner and the hallway carpet work together. Usually, you’d do the same carpet for both the runner and hall. And then something different in the bedrooms.
But you don’t have to. Obviously.

What do you think of this as the runner? And then a deeper color, like the base of the runner for the bedrooms? Or you can even match the light color.

Yes, I like the softer one..I like both though but think the softer one would be easier to work with and look at for hopefully the next 20 years. I’m going to pick up my house and take some more pictures to show the flow of the rooms. Thank you so much for the ideas.
