Yep in these situations usually a tension rod is used. Open the blinds all the way and hang the rod just under the valance of the shades.

Marci, that is a good idea---to ask whether the blinds could be removed. Then there would be more flexibility in what could be used to cover the window. I live in a big city. Rents are high and in demand. I think the landlords are looking for "no problem" tenants and are not willing to do the "extra."

enportlandor, I think if there were a tension rod that extended that wide, whatever hung on it would have to be quite light weight, don't you think?

Look for a bathtub rod -- strong and sturdy. She could use rings attached to curtains on the rod. Since she already has shades she probably wouldn't need super heavy curtains unless that's what whe wants.

einportlandor, I don't see a bathtub rod available that is as wide as the width of a room unfortunately. Since the apartment faces east, it could be quite bright in the morning.

Thank you maddielee. Those rods look good. Only thing is---is that we are looking to get a tension rod that does not need to be held up by brackets that require holes to be put in the walls. All holes will have to be repaired and painted back to the original upon leaving the apartment.

Amazon has tension rods up to 165 inches. How wide do you need?

Be sure there are no restrictions on changing colors of/or how the windows look from outside of the building.. also it is sort of a nice feature to be able to open the curtains for sunlight and a view ……if that matters…

einportlandor, I had a look and I see that Amazon does have wide ones. My daughter knows the room measures about 10 ft x 14 ft. Just not sure if the wall with the window is 10 ft or 14 ft! But it probably is 10 ft.

btydrvn, hadn't thought about whether there was a restriction on the color of the curtains/blinds or whatever! Good point. I agree that it is preferable to be able to open the curtains for a bit of sun or at least some daylight.
