There are pretty murals and old world style tiles if you want classic. Mirror tiles or glass if you want contemporary. Stamped tin if you want country. Good luck.

I like the subway tile idea in a light grey, but I'd go with a matt rather than shiny tile just to add different textures to your surfaces. I probably would not add a red to the accent area. As lovely as it might turn out, it will never be great for resale because it's too taste specific. Do something subtle in greys and whites/ off white. Generally I believe when it comes to kitchens I like to pick cabinets at the same time as countertops and backsplash. Having the vision before you start makes it easier.
