Staining Brick gray/black

I just painted the house a shade of white and want to stain the bricks on the column base charcoal gray. I was getting so tired of the dark color. I also had the landscaping cut way back as it was getting out of control, so it's looking rather bare now, but not for long. Anyway, I'm looking for feedback on either leaving the brick column bases the drab color it is or staining it charcoal gray/almost black. I may also do a faux stain on the black door, or just give it a new coat of black.

I would leave the brick as is. looks nice. I would take off the shutters or get cool wood ones with a cutout of some type - wider, ones that could fit the window.

    Leave the brick as is.

    The white looks great.

Another vote to leave the brick as is. I don’t think it’s drab at all; I think gray would make it look drab and uninteresting.

Another vote, leave the brick as is. It actually goes very well with your new paint .

Sorry I don't like the white the brick is IMO what makes this a special house and painting it is not an improvement. Please take those silly shutters off or get proper sized ones .

I would paint the front door something bright and lively first.

And then probably end up getting rid of the brick & replacing with full height columns.

And replace current shutters with wider ones.

Keep the brick! The house looks great white!
The shutters are to small for the windows. Either replace or eliminate.

When you say drab you have already stated what you want to do lol. But its the wrong choice, BC you cant go back. I would focus on how the small shutters really stand off and look odd now. Maybe you need a new trim color?

If you had kept the dark color of the siding, I would have been OK with removing the vestigial shutters, but white window frames on white siding will be washed out and against the white the shutters look really weanie! New ones need to be bigger and properly hung.

Okay, so the silly weanie shutters are actually the same size as the others. They are hung the same way the others were hung, so how should they be properly hung?

Cute house! Love the white with the nice brick!

deco’s link will explain about the shutters. Sizing should be half each window’s width.

Cute house. Leave the brick columns. Consider painting the railing dark (to make it visually disappear), and painting the front door a nice cheerful color. Maybe some cheerful large pots of flowers in front as well. See what a difference? Your eye goes to the flowers and the door.

Leave the brick. The shutters need to be wider in order to look legitimate. The front door can use a fun pop of color.

I think your house is adorable and charming. It looks good in white but needs “accessories” - some happy color in a few spots.

    Yes increase the shutter size:

Good point and great photo shop! Yes, they probably need to be wider or nothing at all. Unfortunately these shutters don't come any wider than what is shown, so they may end up going back. Thanks for the input. Incoming flowers when it's time. ;)

Keep the brick and absolutely do NOT mess up those cute tapered columns!

I only see two sets of shutters, right and left, and both are too skinny. Here's your opportunity to do some color coordinating via door and new shutters. If you want the look of authenticity, read the article I posted above for some tips. If you just want a decorative accent, change the paint color of them and the door.

Do not stain the columnsBecause porch and trim are white you don't want the house looking too dark everywhere you need contrast but if the columns are really brick there is a I think a covering you can put over the brick but you'd have to check your local home improvement store and talk to the area that has those supplies to the person behind the counter and ask about it

I think the bottom part is the only brick I see but I think it gives it character I really wouldn't mess with it it is fine it gives it a nice touch with the rest

You think your brick is dreary and dark now? Well for heaven’s sake don’t paint it gray!

Those shutters look like bandaids. They’re too skinny for the windows.

The new white color looks real nice.
