kitchen remodel ??

Has anyone used rtastore.com to buy cabinets to redo a kitchen? Is hanging cabinets/installing cabinets for a kitchen hard? My husband has remodeled our bathrooms before and thinks he could do the kitchen. We got estimates to redo the kitchen and it was just way more than we want to spend. Are there any other cabinet places with good pricing and you’ve had experience with them?

    Have you checked IKEA

The advantage of IKEA is that they have a unique method of installation which is easier for DIY people to install versus traditional installation.

Quality is excellent and it really is intended for people in your situation - i.e. DIY with pretty good skills.

You and you husband need to completely assess your skills and take your time planning this remodel. “Remodel” has a myriad of definitions, from simply painting the walls to a complete gut with all new wiring and moving the plumbing. Be realistic in your plans, your abilities, your budget, and your timeline. We totally gutted the kitchen in our first house and my husband built our cabinets. We did everything ourselves due to a lack of money. Four years ago we gutted the kitchen, but hired the wiring and the plumbing and the custom cabinets. Instead of the DIY laminate countertops of our first house, we hired a soapstone fabricator to install the counters. We installed the cherry floors, painted the ceiling and the walls and trim, and supervised. My husband and daughter built kitchen cabinets this summer for the the retreat she is building in the mountains. They are beautifully constructed and fit the space exactly. Read all you can about kitchen remodels, planning, budgeting, and timing.

When we were much younger, hubs and I installed our own cabinets .We ordered some nice ones and put them up ourselves. We had no tricky little complications to deal with, and that might make a difference in how easy it will be to do it in your space.

It was not difficult to do, at all. They have been there now for at least three decades and there are no problems.

If you have a simple plan it willl be pretty easily a do it yourself.

I wouldnt do the countertops myself , again. We did that ourselves, too, and there are a couple of issues. But it is so expensive to have work done in your house. I simply dont know how so many afford to do it.

We are much older now and I balk at just replacing a kitchen faucet. When I was young, I would think nothing of it and just do it. It is not complicated, just physically more difficult for me.

Sometimes the best bargain is dialing back the scope of work, rather than choosing inferior new products. You could paint the existing cabinets. Maybe order new doors for them. DIY new floors. A new counter. Etc. There is a lot that you can do with what you have, as long as it is not falling apart. You'd be surprised at how much ugly can be erased with a good coat of paint! Look at the Kitchen Cabinet Painting Experts group on Facebook for inspiration for DIY transformations. It's a lot of work, but you save a LOT of money!

    I love all things Ikea

I have some friends who have a very nice Swedish design house up on the side of a small mountain and when they built a couple of decades ago they used all Ikea cabinets.

He, himself, is Swedish, from Sweden. He is an engineer and a guy who knows how to do all manner of things. Since he is already an electrical engineer who builds satellites , he got himself certified to even do his own electrical work. Pretty handy guy.

He cut his base cabinets down a couple of inches to fit his wife who is on the short side.

However, he says that he doesnt think that the newer ones at Ikea are anywhere near the quality of these from about the mid 90s, maybe.

Given that is the story of so many other things, he is probably right.

Sara, I dont know what your situation is but there are flat pack cabinets that you can buy at the home improvement stores. I dont know if you are going for a five hundred dollar or a five thousand dollar job.

It seems to me that even those who go for more expensive options rarely use them for a lifetime and some are always remodeling the kitchen anyway. So weigh how much it is all worth to you.

If Ikea has a way that makes it easier for the DIY , that might count for a lot. But, if you have already done a bathroom, this might be well within your ability.

My first kitchen in my first house was Ikea. My sister used Ikea in her kitchen about 15 years ago.

The quality is very good and they look great. And easy for a DIY person. I would absolutely pick Ikea over RTA
