Fixer upper layout ideas

My husband and I are under contract to buy a home that needs a bit of work. Before we put in flooring, we want to figure out the configuration of the living/dining room and the den.

When you walk in from the front door, you’re immediately in a living room/dining room. The sellers started to take down a wall but stopped midway through. On the other side of that wall is the kitchen. To the left of the dining room is the den.

The thing that bothers us is the awkward wall separating the den and dining room. It just feels weird. However, we definitely do not want one big open space that newer homes tend to favor.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this layout?
