Winter pants? Need something warmer.

What pants do you wear in the cold weather? I have been living in joggers all summer but they are too thin for winter. I have some jeans, of course, but often they are too casual or uncomfortable. I have one pair of fleece lined leggings but I only wear them for wintertime walks.

I’d love to find some black stretchy pants that are also warm and the wind doesn’t blow right through them. I have resorted to wearing Cuddlduds under some pants but I’d rather not.

Any ideas? Are spanx pants warmish?

I wear lined wool slacks from a variety of mfgs. They do have to be dry cleaned though. i also have ultrasuede slacks in solid black, brown and camel and in a black glen plaid and a tan and brown plaid, all from Tahari, none of them new this year. They are washed inside out in cold water, hung to dry then when dry tumbled with no heat. Occasionally I will have them professionally pressed to maintain their creases but they are otherwise easily maintained. Eileen Fisher has (or used to have) pull on slacks in a boucle knit in many colors. They are not as warm as wool or ultrasuede but warmer than my standard favorite cotton poplin side zip slacks and they can be washed, hung and ironed or dry cleaned. Finally, I have several skirted leggings that are cotton knit with a bit of stretch but have a brushed surface that is warm.

Athleta has a couple of styled in a polartech stretch fabric that I find very warm-- my sister texted me a year ago and told me I had to try them. I was dubious-- even after they arrived-- but they really are warm and so comfortable! They have tights, joggers and pants .. definitely not dressy but very comfortable for walks, running to the store and sitting on the sofa!

They aren't cheap but they will be running sales from now until Christmas. I will hit them up on black friday .. i want to get the tights.

I am showing in gray so you can see the top is very much a yoga style.

Also pricy but Eileen Fisher's jersey wool is very comfortable and very warm. I had to return the pair I got because the fit was off but the material was lovely!

Annie, the jeggings are cute and Talbots usually fits me but then I still have the cold ankles problem in winter..

Kswl, i like the idea that wool can be washed in the machine.

Funky I have to return something to Athleta today so I will check out those pants. They look like what i need.

Mine, I have passed the Uniqlo store in the mall but never gone in. Not sure I can face the mall,at this time but will look at them online.

Elizabeth, thats a bit rugged for me! i bet they are great in the freezing climates.

I wear Lisette L pants year round when jeans are too casual. I find them to be super flattering and comfortable - the ones I own are a fabric with a bit of give to them. I buy them at a local women's store, so I'm not familiar with their range of styles and dressy/casual options.

I bought Andrew Marc pull on pants at Costco for about $20 a couple of years ago. They are wind-breaking warm in a faux suede, soft and lovely fabric. Much warmer than my cotton, crepe, or stretch denim pants - I'm not one who enjoys being cold.

I see them online Costco, but not in the stores again and I should have bought more than one. They wash like a dream, have not faded in the least (black), dry quickly and are taken from the dryer looking brand new and ready to wear.

I think they run a bit big - or did the year I bought them. I am 5'2" with almost 36" hips and easily wear the extra small.

For summer, I have a pair of Brooklyn pants from Athleta which are very comfortable, I noticed this weekend they have a lined version. https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=467191&tid=atpn001764&kwid=1&ap=7&gclid=CjwKCAiA68ebBhB-EiwALVC-NtYlMyHbdy6fpMGrGw8qEe8oU99J8rUsF_m5cClamAaaeadm0MFQ3xoCP8oQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#pdp-page-content

I wear Boyfriend Pants from JJill I have blue jeans and three colors of chinos. However mine are all at least 13 years old, so I cannot speak to current quality. Perusing their site I do see pants I would try if I wear near a store.

I also wear corduroys, I like the ones from J Crew Factory. They are so cozy https://factory.jcrew.com/p/womens/categories/clothing/pants/straight-leg/classic-vintage-corduroy-pant/BK378

Tailored sweat pants in black. So they're either fleece lined or one pair is fuzzy on the outside. They're not baggy or sloppy. My husband wears flannel lined blue jeans. In Colorado, shorts with a down parka is still the thang to wear.

I bought a few Betabrand pants for my DIL when she had to pull together a teaching wardrobe in a hurry. No personal experience so not sure of the warmth. DIL is north of Seattle so cold climate and I know she wants more. Added bonus I think they have some cute stuff that straddles that line between dress and casual - very pulled together but easy to move in which is important for elementary ed.

I hope they never stop making them - I live in LLBean Perfect Fit pants from fall to spring. I'm short so I buy the petite XL. They are warm and hit just above my foot.

Are you wanting something to wear around the house, run errands, etc. or more appropriate for work, social outings, what?

Around the house I love Landsend Starfish pants. In warm weather I like the crops; in colder weather the long, slim cut ones. I have on a pair right now with a flannel tunic - we are unusually cold here right now! I like ponte pants also - the very slim (almost like leggings but not as tight), worn with booties if I'm going out and about. Yesterday I wore a pair with a long sleeve shirt and a poncho type wrap over it. Paired with a long necklace, booties with a chunky heel and it was good for church and lunch out. Other options are jeans (both skinnies and flared) and I have a pair of wool knit wide leg cropped pants that look great with ankle high boots. I would love to find another pair of these, so will look at those mentioned above.

Never heard of Betabrand, but they have some nice choices and the price point is similar to Athleta. Will look more closely at those.

Seagrass, i have a bunch of the ll bean pants but they get sad looking after awhile. Mine are pretty old. Great around the house though.

Tina, I mostly need them for running errands or for going out casually. If i had to dress up, I’d be sunk! Will look again at Lands End., always a reliable standby.

Annie, I remember you are a bit shorter, but very cute!

I wear jeans a lot including nice black ones when I need to look a little more formal. I also have nice wool slacks for when it’s really cold and regular gabardine and twill when it‘s not very cold. I don’t wear stretch pants of any kind - leggings, jeggings or joggers.

No link, (sorry) but for work I wear Cabela's fleece lined khakis. I bought them on sale last year for $19.99 each. They are super warm (I wear them outside in winter) and run very large. Drop a size or two.

dedtired the nice thing about Betabrand is they come in 4 lengths. My DIl is tall and these work well for her in the long.

Cabela’s. Now there is a place I would not think to look. When I think of that store i think of camo, plaid and fishing and hunting. May have to change my outlook on fleece lined pants.

Thanks for the additional suggestions. I should probably do an inventory of whats already in my closet, but warm pants seem to be lacking.

I wear tights or leggings under jeans, pants, slacks to stay warm. But I don't live in a place that gets cold for very long, so I don't keep lots of cold weather bottoms around. I find layers to be warmer than a single garment anyway.

I do have cushy thick wool socks to keep my feet warm, and plenty of sweaters and jackets and a nice cashmere scarf too. I might even get to use them a bit this winter, according to the Farmers' Almanac 😃

It's been so long since I've worn anything but leggings or jeans. The past few winters, I wore the 32 below long johns ( Costco special) under the basic regular leggings or jeans and I was fine walking around outside. They're nice because they are really not at all bulky. They are like wearing pantyhose (remember that?) under.

If your pants fit right to your skin, as so many seem to wear them, there is no pocket of air between your skin and the cold. Without that pocket of air there is no warmth. Even a napped fabric will create enough of an air space to make some difference.

Denim ,and especially the spandex blend ,has no warmth to it. It is a hard woven fabric that was created for strength and toughness, not warmth. The fiber is smooth and tight and does not hold body warmth.

Leggins fall into the same uselessness for warmth because they are just like a second skin, and a very cold one. A lined leggin, will make some difference, but it is still right next to the skin and that lessens the warmth.

Then there is the fact that so many of the pants on the racks at the department store are all made of just god awful synthetic fabrics that dont hold warmth and often have a loosely knit structure that lets the cold air blow right through or, they are like wearing tubes of cold plastic on your legs.

Pants are one of the best reasons that I am beyond thrilled that I sew my own. I sew them to fit loose, of a good natural fiber or a good blend and I always have good useful pockets. There is not one darned pair of pants over at Kohls that I would even consider buying. UGH!

Hubs has one pair of lined denims that he got from LLBean a good number of years ago. His are all cotton, no spandex. They are warm but also very heavy in weight. He wears them for real outdoor and cold weather. They have that magic combination of layers They are the kind that we use to wear as kids.

It is always good to have layers.

If all I had for warm pants were the ones at the stores,I would choose some napped fabric sweat pants and look for some with a bit of style and a loose fit. If you wear them tight, you are extending the surface of your skin outwards through this second skin, so to speak, and exposing it to the cold. Some that are made for winter sport might have some engineered warmth to them, but not the ones that are available where most of us are going to be shopping.

My favorite brand of pants comes right off of my sewing machine and serger and provides me with pockets of warm air and real pockets that hold my keys, wallet, and phone. Generously big cargo like pockets are also great places to hide a little surprise to be fished out by the very young grandkids. It used to thrill them when grandma showed up with pockets full of little treasures, like Santas bags. It was just a fun little thing.

Of course, only when the are very young. A ten year old digging around in grandmas pockets would seem a bit awkward. But the little ones love it.

I love, love, love my loose pants and big pockets. I have made the same pattern of different fabrics and tweaked style and features, including some secure inner pockets or specialtiy pockets for other things.

Made By Me is my favorite brand.

I have one pair that are sewn of a good quality , yet washable, wool. blend. It is a pretty fabric from back in better fabric days, has a nice full nappy feel to it and I reserve it for the times when I need a dressy casual warm garment. All it needs is a nice sweater and a pair of boots, or a nice pair of warm hand knit socks and some good shoes.

I am pleased to see the style of womens pants coming back to be a bit loose. I think that it is more flattering to many of us and it certainly is more comfortable and can be a great deal warmer in the cold and cooler in the heat.

Hey, we rocked it in our loose denims when we were young!. We looked good!

I see any number of women who really should think twice about wearing their pants stretched over every bit of flesh. When you are revealing every dimple of cellulite, you need to rethink.

Just go to Walmart and stand there a minute and you will see any variety of badly fitting pants. Most women have no choice but to buy from what is offered. That seems pretty dismal, to me.

Womens clothes is almost always a prompt that elicits much comment. There is a lot to be discussed about clothing.

@cyn427 (z. 7, N. VA) and @Funkyart thanks for the mention of those Polartec Athleta pants. I have many Athleta items that I love, but this is the first time I've seen these pants. I have a lot of warm Athleta leggings for outdoor exercise, but these pants would be nice for times when leggings are not appropriate. I just had a 30% off coupon that expired over the weekend...grrr! I know they are on sale now, but still more expensive than with the 30% off. I'm going to order them now but will keep an eye to see if they have another 30% off sale in the next few weeks.

Of course just my luck - these pants would have been perfect for me to wear this weekend to a football game where the high is going to be 35 degrees but none of the Athleta stores near me have them in stock. If only I had known about these pants last week, I could have ordered and had them in time.

And while we are talking Athleta, I have been wearing the new Harmony hooded cardigan sweater lots. I also like the Pranayama cardigan but it is a little warmer. The Harmony was perfect for the 70 deg weather we had last week.

Depends on what I'm doing. My work slacks I wear year round, it's the tops that tend to get heavier when it's cold. My yard gear is often heavy jeans or canvas pants, I got oversizes for if I need to start stacking layers under them. Summer leggings become layers under heavy stuff. If I'm doing outbuildings in the snow or snow removal, I tend to wear a vintage boys set of cherry red snowpants with matching jacket. My lounging and indoor pants go from lighter cottons and such to heavier sweats and fleeces.

@Funkyart last week's sale was a "pre-sale" for next Friday. I'm sure there will be discounts next week, the problem is that the popular items end up selling out quickly. I'll buy the pants now and see if they end up with a better discount next week. I have a store nearby so I can fortunately easily return if I am able to get a better price next week.

I was actually looking at that Harmony hoodie last night but it looks kind of short - not quite cropped but like it barely meets one's waist? I may drop in the store this week and check it out. D17 saw a top there a month or so ago that she really liked but was pricey (she had a gift card). I meant to take a photo of it and later get it for her for Christmas. Of course, I didnt get a photo and can't find anything like it online. All I know is that it was green and cozy looking but either cropped or somewhat short (I remember b/c I looked at it for myself but knew it was too short in length for me). I remember exactly where it was so if it's been moved, I'll ask a salesclerk if they remember it and still have it or can find it online.

@4kids4us .. sorry, the one I am talking about is the Harmony Wrap.. it also has a hood and is a long length. I forgot there was a Harmony Hoodie also.

FYI on the Athleta Polartech-I am 5'3" and the regular small are too long on me. The petite small are perfect.

@cyn427 (z. 7, N. VA) I'm 5'3" also so always order petites from Athleta. It's one of the reasons I like many of their pants! Even in petite, this pant has 30.5" inseam which seems a little long for me (I'm 28-29" inseam) but I'll give them a try.

What type of shoes are worn with the Athleta pants? They look like exercise wear to me so I can’t picture how else they would be worn.

I have a pair of very inexpensive warm pants from Costco. They're 32 Degrees HEAT, black, elastic/drawstring waist, seam pockets, straight leg, cuffed, and under $20 as I recall. You do need to machine wash them inside out to avoid pilling. I'm now 5' 4" and 103 lbs; long waist and short legs. I wear XS, but regular pants can be too long for me, so I like the closed leg. Petite pants 'pull' in a funny way when I walk. Possibly only one of leg bones (femur and fibula) is 'short'?

@hhireno I would be wearing them with sneakers for any outdoor activity where I might be outdoors for a while. Or depending on how they look with the pants, I might wear a warm outdoor boot. For me personally, that would be my kids' games (I have two sons who play sports in college), where we tailgate and sit outside for prolonged periods. I'd wear them if I were meeting a friend for a cold day walk, especially if I were running errands before or after. I'd wear them to our annual Thanksgiving Turkey bowl, our neighborhood Christmas/holiday party (outdoors, local fire dept collects Christmas donations from central area and neighbors socialize before/after). Basically any casual outdoor event when it's really cold.

On my way to a football game where the temp is in the 30s with 10-15mph winds. Wishing I had some warm pants but making due with my 30 y/o silk long underwear that is in dire need of replacement (cant find any that are similar and I love them!). I’m wearing them under jeans. I like that they are super thin so dont make my pants tight or bulky and they do keeo my legs warm. Are CuddleDuds thin?

For certain occasions I’d actually prefer a lined pant rather than two layers. Will check out Lands End in case the Athleta pants dont work out.
