If you aren't confident, I'd suggest maybe having an interior designer create a plan for you. I know there are some that do it online even.

Do you own or are you renting? What is your budget for a rug? What size is your sofa? If you own I would paint the walls a more compatible color to the tile

Im just renting so thats not possible. The room is 11x10 and my couch is 10 feet so it will take up a whole wall. ill have a tv stand opposite the couch. i figure ill need a rug about 8x6. im not really concerned with budget yet because i just want to know what im looking for first

I would go more with texture and weave than something with color or pattern. I'd try to get something that isn't too specific to the space, but rather something very universal looking to you can take it with you to your next home. I feel like you can never go wrong with a sisal or jute rug.

I'm with @Kendrah on a neutral texture but 8x10 sounds like a better size.

Three colors in a room is pretty typical and yours are often used together and are complementary.

You may want to step back and browse on line at brown and grey living rooms to get a sense of what rug style appeals to you. This will also be helpful for accessorizing. If budget is a big factor, Ikea sells nice rugs and you can’t go wrong with a sisal (will also be easier to decorate around and use in other rooms when you move again).

So...pick room designs you like and note the rug used.

My advice is totally different and that is to get a rug as large as the room will allow and invest in a colorful Oriental rug and then to repeat those colors in your accessories such as pillows, throws, lamps etc. Find one that you think is really beautiful and base your design scheme around that. So many rooms are one dimensional where one sees nothing but cool colors, which look good in a photo but are not very cozy or livable. e-bay is a really great source for inexpensive but still gorgeous Oriental rugs. By inexpensive I mean 600 to 900 dollars, but the rug will last forever and is kind to spills and stains, and will give you endless pleasure.
