Help decide a color palette

I need help deciding a color for the siding on my house and also a new roof. The stone will remain on the house. The door will remain but can be painted. The siding is a 7” horizontal siding by Alside called Ascend.
The roof brand is OwensCorning Duration Series.
The existing stone is Eldorado Stone in Cliffstone Manzanita.
I can’t decide. I’m drawn to earth tones usually. I’ve included a picture of the house as it is now and samples of the siding and roof choices. You can see the stone color in the photos. Thank you for your advice and ideas in advance.

They only show a bright white in that particular sidling that I’m using.

I like the greens best. My very prejudiced personal opinion is that a beige house with a brown roof is blah. I also find a lot of husbands like blah colors and we need to pull them into the risky choice of a soft moss green with a gray roof to liven up the look of the house. (Luckily, my husband doesn’t weigh in on any of these kinds of decisions. One of his better traits….)

If you see the beige as ho-hum, you need to convince your husband that those greens are “safe” colors but a little more interesting than beige.

I formally apologize to everyone reading this that has a beige house.

Well said RedRyder. You made me have a smile on my face.
I think my husband is thinking of the investment in this project and is trying to make it a timeless decision and safe but different. But I think the Mountain Fern is a neutral choice and isn’t a trend decision. I found a picture of a similar stone with a similar green to show him. I don’t know about the roof color yet either the dark brown or gray yet but I’m working on the green siding for now. I hope my contractor will get me the large samples so it would help. I’ll try to post that picture I found.

Similar stone color with a moss green siding.

I couldn't find where you said why you need to replace the siding. Is it damaged?

Gutters come in many colors. White windows are popular because they are cheaper. Windows with panes on just the insides are popular because they are cheaper. You likely are aware of that since you just bought them. People with no stone or brick on their homes and with colored siding often resort to white windows and trim for contrast at an economical price. You have stone, so you don't have to do that. People with all brick can have white windows and it's ok. People with white houses can have contrast or not, and it always looks good. You have stone which is a mid-tone. You want a brown roof a little darker than your stone. Whatever siding color you choose, mid-tones for siding and gutter will make the house look bigger and classier, especially the earth colors you and your husband favor. Painting the windows will also make your house look much MUCH better. Make them very dark. Dark brown for brown siding, black for grey siding, dark green or brown for green siding. Next time you get windows get the divided light so the panes are visible on the outside too.

@catlover Leo - The stone-and-green looks wonderful together! I don’t think it’s trendy. It looks more “classic” to me.

Glad I made you smile, since this is a hard decision. You don’t want to “make a mistake” but several of us have voted for green.

@KL Thank you for all the great suggestions. I will definitely consider the gutter colors and trim suggestions. When we updated our windows we were not sure if we we’re going to reside the house. But our roof needs replacing and we’ve decided to redo it all. We paid extra for the window pains between the windows. This will be our last time to do this so we are thinking about the color carefully. I’ve been trying to show and explain the green colors to my husband but I’m afraid he dislikes it very much. He dislikes a blue or green house. Our siding is almost 30 years old. It’s not in terrible condition but in the back of the house it’s more visible. As far as white on the house it’s very common in our neighborhood and it’s not the look we were going for. Although it’s classic and I like it with the darker windows. No one in our neighborhood has a white home with dark windows. They should do that it would look better.
Our stone work is more on the warmer side with lots of brown versus gray. Although there’s some gray in there also.
We are going to get the 7” hard board style siding. They offer 20 colors. But the grays are out and so are the blues and now greens. So we are going towards the Canyon Drift.
Maybe someone might have ideas about the trim color/ gutters and door color for the Canyon Drift. I want it to look amazing.
I’m sorry to all the people giving great suggestions on the green color but I’m afraid it’s not going to happen.
    Canyon Drift

Canyon drift or any of those warm browns your husband likes are fine. I didn't mention it before because you liked the green so much. The browns blend with the stone and will make the house look larger than if you chose contrast. The color scheme will be more sedate and tranquil too. Get gutters that are the color of your siding or a little lighter, but not much; you want them to blend not attract attention. And by all means, try to paint the window frames and anything else that is white. Since you chose the darkest of that warm brown siding series, get the roof on and the warm brown gutters to match the siding as close as you can and THEN choose the paint colors for the window frames and any remaining white. I took a picture of my house on an overcast day and put it in a PowerPoint file. I colored over the windows to show my husband what it would look like. Or you can do a similar thing with the Sherwin Williams Williams color snap visualizer:

    https://www.sherwin-williams.com/visualizer#/active

Don't feel too bad about not having green siding. You will have a green lawn and green trees and shrubs. You can carry your exterior color scheme indoors with honey oak floors, cream walls, and green accents, including a houseplant or two if you want. RedRyder is right in that it is a tried and true combination (warm brown, warm green, and cream), but you will have your green in the landscaping. And in the fall, you can have trees that turn crimson red, and in winter, dark brown twigs, then back to spring with chartreuse new foliage. It will look beautiful, especially if you get rid of the white.

The houses on our street all had white windows too. I had to replace ours because they leaked during a hurricane. Our house was the only one on the street with dark brown brick on the entire front. I got dark bronze windows, "clay" siding and gutters (looks like Nestles Quick in the can), and painted the other white areas the clay color to blend. With red shutters and door it looks like a giant chocolate covered cherry. All the neighbors commented on how "elegant" it looked, and several of them painted their window frames! None of us had known anything but white, because white is so much cheaper. I've read on Houzz of a few home-owners associations that have banned white windows, but I don't know of any locally. Seeing the difference is mind-blowing. Try it in the SW visualizer.

Now for your door color. You will want a contrasting bold color here to make your front door a focal point. Trying on different options is harder to do in the visualizer but easy in the PowerPoint if you are at all familiar. You can try different door colors. You currently have green doors, but they are a cool green. I suggest a warmer color because your house is a warm brown. I like a red door the color of the red sample in your siding sampler board. Red is the color desired in colonial times and was considered a sign of welcome so it is very traditional. If you had a dark grey roof you might have tried a black door but you are getting a dark brown roof and I think that's better anyway. If you or your husband still want green, try a warmer dark green instead; anything from dark olive to a brighter green like in evergreens when they make new candles. But I like red better and leave the green for your landscaping.

@catlover Leo - I am a fan of green, and I’m also a fan of a happy marriage. @K L is giving you great advice.

@RedRyder Thanks for the wonderful advice on the green. I’m sure someone reading this discussion will find it very useful if they choose a green house. You are right my husband and I need to be happy in our choices and marriage so thank you again. I agree that KL has some great ideas for me.

@KL Thanks KL for very good advice on the color that we’ve settled on for the siding. I’m liking it more and more.
I’m going to go with your suggestion on the gutters to blend in with the house and roof. I don’t like the look of gutters so this idea will help blend them in better with the dark brown roof.

The windows are another issue though as far as painting them another shade. I really like the idea of have another color other than white but I don’t see that happening. One reason is the windows are brand new and the white window squares in between the glass and are white. It would look strange if the only white on the window are the squares I also know my husband would never go for it. I would love to do it but I don’t think he would. We are trying to not have maintenance with having to have the windows painted if need be in the future. Had I known that we were going to reside the house I would have gotten another color window at that time.
Because of this I really don’t have much choice with the trim on the house either. I’ll need to keep that white I guess. We also have the white columns on the front portico.
I love the combination of your windows being a bronze color and the house clay. Very classy and different.
I’m not familiar about using PowerPoint. I tried the visualization tool from the siding company but with out much success. I’ll try it again but I don’t think I’ll need if if I’m keeping the trim white.

I’m totally fine with not choosing the green. It was a great idea but not for us. My stone work is more warm and I think it’s going to look great with the Canyon Drift. You’re right there will be plenty of green around the landscape. You described it perfectly.

Your door suggestions are also great. I will consider the red on the siding selection or if not a warmer green would go better with the warmer siding and roof.
We love the look of the homes in the Colonial times. Like they have in Williamsburg VA. That’s exactly what we love.

This is a good picture of my stonework on the chimney from this morning. It’s going to look nice with the siding. Like you said KL tranquil. I like that.

You want contrast against your stone so I wouldnt pick creams or browns too close to the stone color. You want the siding to pop against the stone and stand out to make it more interesting. White would give your house an updated modern look with a black roof. That would be my firs choice. Second choice would be the bottom one I circled.

I found a picture of the color we chose Canyon Drift with the trim called Monterrey Sand. The windows are white like mine and the roof is called Driftwood. I think this is a nice combination.

Your stone will be a better match as well.

I would have voted green, but then I read your husband won’t bite, so I think you are making a reasonable compromise. You still have a green door!

I mainly just wanted to say your stone chimney is beautiful

Yes I know many people love the green. I liked it also and it would have looked great I’m sure but it’s ok we are both happy with what we have chosen together. I also liked the Canyon Drift and the green and was torn between the two. But now it’s decided.
Thank you for your compliment on the chimney.

Im glad you are liking your choices more and more, and that both of you will be happy with them. I think we all will enjoy seeing pictures. I saw you have snow and am wishing we had a little. Your house colors look really pretty in the snow.  The white windows will be as ok as most homes in the country. They are popular for the economy so they are normalized. I don't want to leave you feeling bad about them. I definitely agree that painting windows all the time is no fun. I like low maintenance too! However, I can say from experience the the white pains inside are not a problem from the outside. My dark bronze windows are white inside. I thought it would look weird, but it doesn't at all. It doesn't even look white. That's just for all the others reading this post.

@KL Thank you for you help. You’re ideas are great and helped me. I appreciate your encouragement.
It’s to cold in NY to do this project right now. We are talking with the contractor and will probably do this early spring.
At least we settled on the siding brand the wide plank size and color. Now we need to zero in on the exact dark brown roof shade to choose.

    Where are you in NY?

Definite no to gray siding and a brown roof!

I’m trying to choose the best roof shingles. The first two are Owens Corning Brand. The last one is Timberline GAF.
What do you think will go best with the siding color Canyon Drift. I’m not sure about warm vs. cool tones that will go well with the siding.

I would choose a solid brown color for your roof. Your stone already has enough variation that I think a roof with a lot of color variation would look too busy.

Have you tried uploading a photo of your home in the Alside visualizer? It has the Ascend line available to see on your home, and you can play around with color choices for the siding, roof, trim, etc.

    https://alside.renoworks.com/

These are all a solid color brown type but are architectural type with some different tones of brown in them. Some are warmer and some more cooler or neutral tones.

I will try again to use the visualizer tool that Alside Ascend has. I didn’t do a good job with it last time but I’ll give it a go. Thanks CeeWhy

Monitors aren’t the best way to assess colors but the first brown (Teak) looked the best to me with your siding choice. The second seemed the most “speckled” ( brown Wood) and the third looked “washed out” and not rich enough. Can you see “real life” roofs in these colors? There have to be SOME in your area of Long Island!

Ask the roofer if you’re allowed to know addresses with these roof colors so you can subtly “drive by”. Shingles are high up and hard to choose when they’re at your eye level. You want to see them on top of a house.

Thank you @RedRyder. You’re right it’s difficult to see the true colors on a screen. I’ve since found out that the Mission Brown is discontinued, that’s the one you didn’t like. So it’s between the first two. I like the Teak also.

Your idea is very good. It’s best to see them on a roof on an actual house. It will help with the decision. I’ll be asking the contractor.

If you are anything like me, you will knock on the door of houses with nice brown roofs and ask the color. 😂

I was able to do the Visualizer with some help. This is the result of the Canyon River siding and brown roof.

Hey, congratulations! Good job using the visualizer! I am surprised how dark the siding is. I thought it would be lighter, more like the stone. Also, the sample board makes the coler look much warmer than what the visualizer shows. How do you feel about it? My opinion doesn't matter, but I would have preferred more blending of colors, and now would shift my preference to trying the pebble with the same roof. Can you show that please?

Oh, and I like the roof color. How do you feel about it?

It looks a bit dark to me when you see the siding on the house. I agree.
I’ll try the pebble on later and I’ll post it. I hope I can do it. Lol
I like the roof with the stone it’s nice. The door color isn’t on my mind yet.

This is the Pebble color. It’s just a bit deeper than what we have now. Not sure what to do.
My husband says he likes the deeper one because the Pebble looks very similar to what we have now.
At first when you look at the deeper one it’s such a change but then it settles to the eyes.
    Tell me what you think?

Sorry that’s not the Pebble. I’ll try again.

    Top Canyon Drift
    Bottom Pebble

I think Canyon looks better with the roof, and pebble looks better with the stone. Argh! And I am having a hard time getting past the white windows so I may be hopeless.  So you guys like the Canyon?  It may look better in reality than on the visualizer.
