Sizes achieved by trees and shrubs vary with circumstances encountered by each specimen. That said I would give a fig tree at least 15 ft. of horizontal space. And if you are in a climate area where these do well and reach full size over time, double that distance could easily be needed. Otherwise if you are in a region that is at the cold end of their tolerance, you might want to use the annual hard pruning method wherein it is basically grown as a sprouting shrub. (See web sites focused on figs and fig growing for details). In which case it will never build up into something even 15 ft. across. As long as this treatment is kept up.

You can prune it to the size you like it.

It would be easier for us to give you advice if we know your growing zone, and your location.

I live in British Columbia, Canada my growing zone is 6, I am growing fig trees mostly in containers but trying a few in ground, struggling really, my in ground fig trees are covered I even winded with heating cord and hoping for the best.

My container fig trees are in garage for winter, seconds pictures is Tena fig in ground and this is how I wrap it for

It's wrapped in burlap then heating cable then green shrub protection and white garden fabric to keep it cool when it's to sunny in February.

This is how it stays all winter until mid April or so.

Bluemoonlight, last spring, I got a terribly itty bitty 'Negronne' from T&T seeds, the thing no bigger than a few toothpicks stuck together! I've got pretty good green thumbs, but even had wondered if the minuscule thing would survive, it did and has grown very well! I should have trimmed it up as you have to one main leader, but then was eyeing up those side shoots for taking cuttings, which I ended up failing with anyways. The thing really hasn't wanted to go dormant looking with foliage remaining green as a summer's day, have set the plant in a bathroom that gets rather frosty cool, so I hope it gets the message to GO TO SLEEP!! To induce branching, in March I'll prune a bit off the top and again attempt that portion as a cutting, or maybe will just layer it. With being in Alberta, of course must keep these as potted, hopefully I enjoy the fruit as much as anticipated and then might look to acquire a few more varieties. 280 cm = a little over 9 ft, both height and width, after 10 years. I have read other places that it is a small tree.
