So beautiful! I love your copper pots and how the backsplash goes all the way ip the wall, I ran out of marble in my slab to do thay and it’s so gorgeous! Also love how you handled that corner left of the sink that is not easy to figure out. Love the way the towers on each side of the hood are glass on the sides too not just the front. Absolutely stunning! The arch, the pull out cutting board, the open shelves in the teal cabinetry, all the details!! What do you store in those little pull outs on the bottom of the towers?

I was disappointed to read that you redid that charming original kitchen but after seeing the new one, I was wowed. You kept the feel of the house with the new one while updating so it's so much more useable.

I just hope you saved that wonderful light fixture you had in the kitchen and I also hope you sold the fabulous stove to someone and didn't just ditch it. :)

Finally found a brave couple who got it in their truck with the help of 4 of my work crew! She was a real beaut. Even had the original salt & pepper shakers!

WOW! Just love it, all of it! Your detailed planning of each area, beautiful colors and finishes, the warmth and inviting feel of it, the clever choices in what could have been problem areas, all of it just took my breath away. One of the prettiest, most appealing kitchens I've seen in a long time, and so perfect for your house. Another huge fan of trash compactors here, wouldn't be without one. Bravo! I noticed the subtle way you moved the teal around the room with the vase and the pillow, and it just knitted it all together. That big window over the window seat floods the space with light, and showcases the 3-sided glass towers to perfection. Oh, and the French-mattress seat cushion is perfection, too. So nice to see that you use your beautiful English King silver. Thanks for the wonderful treat sharing this truly lovely space! May you enjoy many years in your very special kitchen.

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Great job, you really deserve to be told that. Only issue I have and it's perhaps because I'm a Germaphobe , how do you keep that bench cushion clean especially so close to the counter that has no ledge? Otherwise I really loved the after. Bravo

@SF DESIGN so far it has stayed clean! No spills or anything since that’s not near a food prep area. The only maintenance is vacuuming with the upholstery attachment since our cat likes to lounge in the sun there. Plus I bought it on Etsy from a company in India so with shipping it was under $400. And it is double sided, so if anything catastrophic happened I could flip it haha.

Back in the day, I would have loved that stove. Of course now, I'm an induction convert. My sister had one, but didn't have the S/P shakers.

Wow, you've really created a wonderful space and, as others have said, the photos have had lots of intense (and enjoyable) scruity. To my eye, your kitchen is 'quirky' in all the right ways: unique in layout, color, and texture, with lots of different things that come together in a way that looks like it's evolved naturally--and correctly--over time. It's like your "before" kitchen in that timeless way, but with the space and convenience of a new one.

LIke cpartist, the vintage stove definitely caught my eye, and I hope it has lots of years of service left in its new home.

This is truly a stunning remodel that clearly captures the history of the house as well as the needs of the homeowner. I’m curious about the process. Did you design this yourself? Did you work with a kitchen designer? This feels like the type of outcome that many aspire to but just can’t quite get there. Would love to hear more about your process that led to such an amazing outcome. Well done!

@lmckuin We had an architect for our attic remodel and once we realized we were going to have to do that shear wall and demo the kitchen, they got involved in that aspect as well. I pretty much designed the layout and where I wanted things since I do a lot of cooking. Having a spot for everything and having all the appliances hidden were key for me (toaster, blender, instant pot, mixer, kettle, microwave, food processor). The architect came up with that clever arched cabinet to hide the dumbwaiter shaft (this is our forever home, so we wanted to make sure we could age in place here 40 years from now when it’s not so easy to carry things up a spiral staircase).

But I have been traveling and collecting imagery and ideas for years and years. We’ve lived in this house for 16 years so I had a lot of time to think, haha. I was really inspired by European and British kitchens, and my travels in Italy and the Italians’ love/acceptance of old & imperfect things. Plus the marble in Italy is everywhere- love it! I also really love Athena Calderon‘s kitchen and her ideas around living beautifully. I’ve been collecting antiques and vintage wares, and wanted to have those beautiful things and artwork incorporated as well.

The plaster-looking hood came about since the spiral staircase is within view of the kitchen, and so it kind of continues the theme. I also love plaster. If I had the budget to plaster my whole house I would.

The biggest splurge were these out of state Bertch & Christiana cabinets with the kiln baked catalytic finish paint job (CA won’t allow that here). I designed my mom‘s kitchen with custom locally made cabinets about 10 years ago and the paint chipping in high use areas in year 2 was so disheartening. I wanted something truly timeless that wouldn’t have to be redone in 10 years. So I did have a kitchen designer (Kitchens Galore) come and take all the final measurements and delve into the nitty gritty of where everything would go, which drawers had dividers, where to put roll outs etc., and order those cabinets for me.

In general, just finding some designers you love (for me it was on Instagram) really helps. You can start to see a pattern of what you’re attracted to plus find invaluable sourcing info. I also looked at a lot of kitchens and figured out what I didn’t like. Then I just picked out every single thing in the kitchen based on online research (my knobs and pulls are from this UK company that casts knobs out of brass based on antique designs, the sink is a dupe for a much more $$$ company in Florence) and had it all ready for the contractor. The only thing I ever saw in person was the Carrara marble that I picked out at the stone yard.

Anyway, there wasn’t a real method to my madness, just a wish to have a cozy, vintage, lived in, “not new” looking kitchen!

I like both kitchens, but yes the first is too cramped for real cooking. You've done a great job. I like the teal, too.

Many things about your kitchen remind me of mine, though yours is so much prettier. 😉 I had a banquette built into a corner so that my grandchildren could sit there to eat, watch T.V., draw, read books, etc. They love it! Our bench opens up to a storage area for placemats, children's items, and even my small electric porch blower. Quite handy, and I have no problem cleaning the cushion. What I would not be able to have with the grandchildren is the glass book case underneath. My GC would kick and break the glass in no time!

I am in the process of switching all of my spices into labeled glass jars like yours. I find keeping my spices in a wide drawer (mine is 36") holds so much more than the spice inserts sold with cabinets.

Although I too love Carrera Marble, I was afraid to use it. Instead we went with a hard white/gray/tan marble that is sometimes mistaken for granite because it functions just as well.

Could you tell me where you purchased two items in your kitchen? The brass bar over your range, for one. I have a brass pot filler, but I feel that my backsplash needs something else. Also, do you know where you found your planter head? I have been looking for one for a while and cannot find the exact look that I want. Yours is lovely!

How are the Christiana cabinets holding up for you? We've had ours a few weeks and the paint is already scratching and chipping on the edges. Are yours still in good shape?

@marylandalia oh no! I don’t have a single chip or even a scratch on my Christiana cabinets! And they’re in my high traffic prep zone. They were installed nearly 4 years ago. My Bertch ones, I do have 3 little chips on drawer edges. I would definitely check back with them to see what might’ve happened during manufacturing.

Barrister case cookbook storage and window seat? Brilliant. Swoon worthy copper pot display. Incredible storage. Great counter space. And the finishes are the cherry on top. Now I want to see the rest of your house. And also want to know what you store in the tiny blue drawers.
