Is a 30 inch wall mounted range hood too small to make statement?

Hi! I have a 30 inch space between my cabinets that I am thinking about installing a 30 inch wall mounted range hood. Couple of problems - I know you are supposed to go larger than the cooking space, but it won't fit any larger than 30. (Slide in range cook top is approx 30 inches as well.) So I'm stuck looking for a 30 inch range hood. My question is - will it look too dinky to make a statement? Maybe it's not worth the work to convert it! Right now there's a useless cabinet above the range with an under the counter hood. Help please!

It can look good (nobody really noticed a 36 vs 30" hood anyway). It will certainly ventilate better, assuming this is ducted.

Do you have a plan for the backsplash? You're likely to end up with newly exposed wall.

We remodeled last year and did a 30” cabinet with integrated exterior venting hood over our 30” range. See what you think but I love it!

@eaw 513 - I don't want to hijack the thread, but was wondering if you have any more pictures of this wall in your kitchen. We are about to start construction and are debating extending tile on an entire wall that includes a sliding door, similar to what you have. Haven't seen many examples of this. Thanks!

You can do a 30". you'll have to buy an insert (youre moving the microwave, yes?)

keep in mind you'll prob have to remove those upper cabs to fit the hood. the venting will need to be 30-36" above the stovetop.

ifi you really want a statement, remove the side cabinets and the granite splash

If you want to make a STATEMENT with the hood, don't make it blend in with your cabinets or splash. Choose a stainless steel, glass, metal or wood hood, possibly a bright color (especially if your new range is in a bright color).

Replacing an over-the-range microwave with a hood is a good idea. You do not need to get a cabinet hood surround or an insert that was mentioned above. Just buy a nice-looking stainless steel hood. The Vent-a-Hood Excalibur model makes a statement even in the 30" width size.

Please note that your current backsplash behind the range will be too short for the hood. I.e. your current backsplash comes as high as the OTR MW you have. But a hood does not come down as far as an OTR MW. There should be about a 30" distance from the bottom of the hood to the cooktop. The distance from the bottom of the OTR MW to the cooktop is typically in the range of 18". Since it looks like you have a slab backsplash, you will need to cut out the backsplash that is just behind the range and replace it - a stainless steel panel works well for this, and is not expensive. The panel behind the range will make the hood area even more "statement-y"

This is a pic of the 36" width VAH Excalibur hood, but you can see how it would make a statement even if 6" narrower. You don't need to get the utensil bar - that is an extra embellishment.

Here is a photo of a range with the stainless steel backsplash behind it.

Here's my Vent-a-Hood from 2011. I still love it. Its 30" in my small kitchen. Its externally vented though the upper cabinet.

Below is what it looked like after i finished tiling the wall, before the install of the hood:

I agree you might get a hood that will have ducting in the cabinets above the cooktop . I often do 30" hoods over 30" ranges sometime is just work better in the design You do need to look for one with a bit higher CFM. I am not sure your kirchen needs a statement hood IMO you have alot going on in there an added staement might not be a good idea, A nice simple stainless hood and wether you keep the upper cabinets there or not will depend on how the hood is vented .So get the best hood you can with theproper CFM and that along with where you plan to vent is what will decide if the cabinets stay or go.

I have been referring customers to Art of Range Hoods for many years. They are extremely talented and I can assure you that your hood would be quite a statement! Check out their website and, if interested, call them. They are great at coming up with unique designs.

If the range hood is not going to be vented to the outside then I agree it’s not worth it. However if it will be vented I would look at stainless Vent a Hood. Mine is very simple but it works very well. Before I got mine I would never cook bacon or fish unless I wanted to smell them for 3 days!
