kitchen cabinets color and lighting

Hello everyone.

We are about to get our cabinets painted. We have bm chantilly lace on the walls and i was thinking of carrying that through to the cabinets also and then a black island. Not sure if I should stick to 3 pendant lights or get two big ones (islands is 141” wide). Any thoughts/ideas are welcome.

You are at REDO on that wall. Sorry.......don't waste paint on the high/ low.

Also appears the island is currently too long for adequate clearance at Fridge side.

just back up a bit..... there are issues but doesnt mean all negative . walls look good now w fresher color......I would change the hardware to a satin nickel.....I would think about a new backsplash.....I would consider new pendants .....go shopping and look.... there is a question as others mention.... the lay of the cabinets but granted painting white would mitigate that somewhat......but you can fix wall arrangement also. My issue is the age of the cabinets and wondering about lack of base drawers and if i'd want to bother with the painting. I dont actually object to the wood cabs just based on looks.....so can you cancel the painting project. otherwise I could see possibly painting the fridge side in a tone or two from the wall color just to blend that whole side in. do you think about what a more interesting backsplash would do...thats eye level and maybe more logical to do something there....

Please fix those staggered cabinets they scream dated. IMO having cabinets painted is a huge chunk of $$$. I think that whole wall needs a redo , it is hard to actullu guess the size of the walkways but in the pic that fridge seems too close to the island.IMO the island should have been the same length as the width of that wall. I also never like sinks directly across from a range . IMO wait and save to do the kitchen right . All base cabinets should be drawers, that brick on the island needs to go.

It seems 3 of the 4 can lights for the rear run were placed too far from the edge of the counter. They create a shadow from your body on what you're prepping. Poor task lighting. 4" led cans should be 6" in from the edge of the work zone counter. The one to the right can stay. The others don't have to line up. Function over matchiness. I'd delete the pendants for cans with enough lumens to produce 450 at the island counter surface. Wide spot bulbs 3500k color temp.

Once the cabinets are white and the island is black the kitchen will look very different - it has the potential of looking very cold. Chantilly Lace is very white - how does it look with your floors? If you're keeping the counters, how does it look with them. I would consider only painting the perimeter cabinets and leaving the island the way it is. Also look at White Dove for the color which would soften the white. Or paint only the uppers. The two color look is popular right now. But if it were me, I would just be saving my money for a complete remodel to fix all of the things mentioned by the previous commenters.

Wow. Thank you all for your honest opinions.

Since this house is only 4 years old I can’t justify a redo now or in a few years so going with the refresh now.

Will ask our guy about leveling the heights of the cabinets. Hopefully he can do something. It’s funny that never bothered me.

I have seen a grey/white subway tile set that I thought would tie in the granite and the chantilly lace. We are definitely removing the stone and replacing with panels. Since the black maybe too hard maybe I go with a dark charcoal instead (iron ore) or a navy (hale navy). For pendants I was thinking of 2 big cone shape ones..in a softer color…. Light gray perhaps to match with the backsplash and granite.

Also. There is plenty of space by the refrigerator… think it was just the pic.

you may have a lighting issue indeed. the last pic of fridge side makes everything look different...... time of day issue ?? ...different lights thrown on? it looks better . I'd vote more to "don't paint " side of the equation. then you can select some things to do ...optional type of list...there's a few to select from.

Agree that there are lots of potential updates that don’t involve painting the cabs - i might start with removing the stone from the island and painting that a nice light creamy color, updating the pendants for sure - i think 2 larger one could be nice (but i would avoid grey). i would also replace that tall cabinet with a terrific hood

@la_la Girl yes that is stone. Will be removing it.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the staggered cabinets. What if I was to remove both cabinets either side of the hood and replace with shelves. Replace the hood cabinet with something fancier and then take the 3 cabinets on the sides to the ceiling?

    Any other thoughts?

I don't think I would paint the cabinets.

I would change out the lighting

    Fix the staggered cabinet heights

    Get a different hood

Stain the stone a different color on the island.

Thanks. I do want to paint them a lighter color as it’s pretty far in there. Doesn’t get much natural light
