This may be the landlord’s way of weeding out renters who are paid in cash because such jobs do not appear to be as stable as those with a standard, regular paycheck.

I ask for last 3 paycheck stubs, not bank statements. Consistency is key (and seeing any garnishments). So maybe offer a couple years of 1040s. Probably lacking that too, so if for some reason the landlord still wants a cash earner, you could offer 6 months advance.

Previous tax returns will help.
