Ligustrum Trimmed Back Too Short Question

We have a big ligustrum bush. Our yard person cut trimmed it back too much. When it grew out again, it looks different. Not sure how to explain how it looks, but it is like it is covered in additional sets of leaves in addition to what it normally had. I don't suppose there is anyway to return it to its previous look is there?
