We have ours by the sink, paired with the switch for the over-sink light. I would want one there, because that's the location you are at when you think about wanting that light. I can see a good argument for having it at the door though. In the early morning, the UCL are the only thing I want on, and being able to do that right at the doorway could be nice. What about a 3-way switch in both locations?

Yea, that was my thought -- wire it for a 3-way.

I use my UCLs for task lighting, so I have the switch on the backsplash not too far from the sink. Whether i am rinsing something at the sink, or using the counter to chop/mix/etc. I can just flip the switch for the UCLs without having to walk anywhere. I do not really see the advantage to having the switch for the UCLs by the door. Even if it's first thing in the morning, you are going to walk over to the counter to make coffee or pour a glass of juice, so the switch IMO should be nearest the counter.

I have mine by the counter but on the side of the kitchen where we enter the room, not near my sink/prep space. I don't usually have the overheads on, use the under-cabinets most of the time, so that placement of the switch made the most sense to me so I could flip them on as I walk into the room. My kitchen isn't big, so not a big deal to walk a few steps to turn them on if I'm already in the kitchen working. Optimal placement depends on the particulars of the kitchen, though. OP seems to not be sure what to do, so what the heck make it a 3-way, problem solved.

Yes, it's a function of particular kitchen layout, and how dark your kitchen is at 5am in December. As someone who occasionally turns on the overheads to safely navigate to the UCL, then back to turn off the overhead, a 3-way seems smart.

Thanks for the input. I’ve decided to go with placement by the sink. That was my first thought but started to second guess myself when he mentioned the wall switch.
