New Build Window Placement Help!

Hi,

In the process of buildng a house. We’ve decided to add an extra window in 2 of our bedrooms with external walls. We‘re not sure if we should add a big window or a top skinny one and the placement. Its an estate so small garden on side where the windows would go, looking onto neighbours side wall, close to neighbours.

Thanks in advance for

the help!

How do these windows effect the exterior? Elevation drawings with the windows sketched in for context?

I dont have these too hand, will have to get them. Do you think it will look funny from the outside with the different size windows. The two bedrooms are along the same side of the house as well as a bathroom window in the middle of the two bedrooms along the same wall/side. Attached a pic here you can see the wall for the main bedroom, then bit of bathroom window,

on the other side of the bathroom is the other bedroom. Not the best pic!

Size also depends on where the bed is placed (the default placement based on windows, entry, doors, circulation). This doesn't look like the U.S., and I might be a little hesitant going with such a long span of window from the looks of construction, so better risk with multiple windows/posts (mulled look).

I need to see te whole house plan and what do you mean y estate? Usually in NA an estate says no neighbors close by. Window placement is reicky in bedrooms for the reasons above I have one big window and then above my bed wi have along wide window but only 16 High so the bed sits under there . We can't tell without seeing the exterior plan and the the floor plan.

Agree with the ”estate” question. What does that mean?

What direction does this side face? What's the climate?

Thanks for all the responses, attaching floorplan. Its bedroom 1 & 3 we wanting the extra windows. Its in a complex with a group of other houses and the estate is then fenced. Houses have to be unifirm so wont allow mulled windows. Mixed climate can get hot in summers and be quite cool in winter. Would want the bed to go against the wall where we want the extra window.

If these bedrooms face South or West, heat build-op can be a consideration. At least if in the northern hemisphere.

Thanks for the input, I think it would be ok with extra window heat wise. Just need to decide best way foreard with window, cant decide!

If there's a view I'd try and find a way to go with the larger size. Landscaping with berms can create a view if necessary.

Not much of a view, will see if there is anyhing we can do to landscape

I love having natural light from multiple angles. I'd add the skinny windows, not the big ones. High enough and centered so you can place a bed underneath them. Will you be able to open them, for fresh air?

What kind of windows are you using? Awning? Sliding? An example of them, as prescribed by your estate? Are they not restricting the exterior appearance of your home? Do you have privacy concerns for the bedroom? Does your neighbor have windows on that side of their house? To put in windows only to cover them with shutters or blinds seems wasteful, if that is the case.

Thanks again for the input! We wanting sliding type if its the skinny ones. I like lots of natural light which is why we wanting the extra windows. The neighbour doesn't have windows directly opposit from bedroom 1 but there would be a bit of garden inbetween in both side, low fence and their wall. Bedroom 3 would look out across the garage carpark area of the neighbours.

I love big windows but i suppose the skinny might be better.

How high would you put it and what width, about 60cm down? Do you think it must be inline with the top of the other window in the bedroom or could it go higher? Might look strange from outside if not inline with other windows on the same side?

It’s not going to work out too costly already spoken to builder. In your opinion would you still just leave it rather?

From what I can tell from the plan, consider same size transom window in each room. Or perhaps sky lights too if allowed.

To lower the cost, think about fixed insulated glass. Those can be framed inexpensively by a finish carpenter.

I would do both windows the same in both of those bedrooms -- same height, same width, same placement with regard to ceiling/floor. Even though a person might never see them at the same time, and there is space in between those rooms, it just seems right to make them the same. I also wouldn't be upset if these two windows aren't at the same height as any other window -- it's not all that uncommon.

I'd place the windows fairly high up in the wall, for the effect of the first picture jackowskib posted.

Because you've spoken with the builder and it's affordable and you'd like it, do it -- there's no better way to get natural light than additional windows.

    I agree,more windows..more natural light …the better…if there was room ….and sliding doors could lead to a small private outdoor space…even better…

I agree that high windows will be best. Same size in both rooms. And, for the sake of symmetry, I would line the top of them up with the top of any other windows/doors in these spaces. You will now have to make sure that the headboard of your bed/beds are no taller than the bottom of your windows. Do you plan any sort of covering for them? Blinds, etc? For privacy/light control. Again, if only to soften the windows’ appearance both inside and out.

Thanks for all the feedback, we might get blinds still have to decide
