kitchen appliances help!!!

Hello! We are planning to start construction in late may and We need to order our appliances urgently! I am struggling with what to order!! Our layout is approved and permits are in. Some of the details in the kitchen design will Change as we zero in. But the general layout is there. FYI we are a family of 3 (for now) but we also love to entertain and have a lot of gatherings.

Re. Appliances :
I know where our 36” range / dishwasher and 48” fridge will go. What is up for debate is the range / wall oven situation. Do we go for a dual fuel range and find a way to work a wall oven into the design? Or is better to do a range top and double wall oven?

I cook and bake a lot! Currently we have a thermador and I don’t love it. The griddle scratched off and one of our burners broke after 3 years. I don’t hate it but I feel like it would be great to have something better. Baking in it is not amazing. ATM I use my air fryer for roasting my veggies and a lot of things bc it’s so quick and easy and cooks things pretty damn good.

Visually we need something classic looking and not too modern - so Miele is a no go for the range. We were debating btw wolf / Thermidor / Jenn air. But I have concerns about them breaking at such high price points. I want something solid if we are going to spend $$$. I see a lot of posts about blue star and capital. And would love recs!

would it make sense in our layout to do a blue star range top with a double wall oven maybe? I saw it suggested elsewhere..

For the fridge…. We were leaning towards subzero. Ultimately with how much a big fridge is I just want something that’s going to last. Our last whirlpool was busted within a year. On the fridge we tonight a 48” side by side. But when I saw the SZ 42” French door it seemed like it was incredibly spacious and really close to the 48 side by side. (We have a basement freezer for extra storage). If anyone has an alternative fridge suggestion lmk. Again I’m mainly focused on long lasting quality over brand name. Should we consider kitchen aid or any other? We only know what we saw at Ferguson.

Dishwasher…. We hate our Thermidor dishwasher. It Is the worst. Bosch???

Oven options - would really love advice here. I hear the Miele cso is amazing and I bake so much I kind of don’t care if it’s different look wise than everything else. But obv open to suggestions that might function and fit better. With the ovens I would love to have a combo oven situation that covers baking / roasting / warming / microwave and any other fun tricks for cooking I am not yet aware of.

Thank you so much!!!! Really appreciate the tips. We are trying to get everything ordered this week. 🙏

And with that in mind - do you recommend ordering at a local spot like Ferguson or finding the best deal online at Aj Madison or appliance connection??

FYI - Please ignore the cabinet colors and the lame ish renderings… we are going to go with a custom wood cabinet. Will post on that later!.

Here is a view of our kitchen currently. Everything to the left is coming down and that’s where the island will be opening up to the rest of the house. The second photo is a view looking at the kitchen. All those walls will come down so you will be looking at the kitchen from this direction. All one big space.

“Or is better to do a range top and double wall oven”

Yes. I recommend a 36” Bluestar rangetop that has open burners and cast iron top. A cast iron top means you’ll never have to see ugly scratches and burn marks around your burners again. Wall ovens could be GE, Monogram, Bosch are all good. Wolf works well as wall ovens but they’ve had the blue interior chipping issue which I am not sure has been resolved. IMHO, a 36” range has an oven that is too large - longer to heat up, and you will rarely need that amount of width in an oven. Have you seen 36” ranges in person?

The renderings you show all are different. In particular the fridge placement, but several things are different in each of them. Hard to advise you. I am not a fan of T-shaped islands with two levels.

Switch out all or most of your lower base cabinets for base drawers.

I prefer a hood that is stainless steel over a cabinet surround hood. The cabinet surround hoods often are not deep enough to cover the front burners. In any case, make sure your hood has baffle filters, not mesh filters.

”do you recommend ordering at a local spot like Ferguson or finding the best deal online at Aj Madison or appliance connection??

For something like a microwave, you can order online, but both those online sites you mention have bad reputations. If you want to order online, Abt Appliances is good. It is better to buy locally in case there is a problem.

The only pro-style gas range that received a recommended rating from CR was the 30" Monogram ZGP304NTSS ($5600). The similar 36" Monogram ZGP366NTSS ($7100) is available but at substantially higher price. You may also want to check out the 36" Cafe CGY366P2TS1 ($5900). Monogram and Cafe are both GE Appliance brands.

CR's (only) recommended combo wall oven is the KitchenAid KOCE500ESS.

Yes to a range top and double ovens. Have you checked the induction ones? So easy to clean. I agree you should shop locally for appliances. I found the prices to be the same. Are you able to go to city and see more variety in person?

Thx! Def feeling more decided on the rangetop with double oven. But trying to zero in on the best choices. I checked out blue star but the open range would be way too hard to clean…So looking again btw wolf and Thermidor and monogram for the 36” on the rangetop.

On the double wall ovens looking at wolf vs fisher paykel.

For fridge I think we will do a True 30” fridge column and then get freezer drawers to go in our island

@M Miller thank you for the suggestions. Do you think that the blue star closed range would be a good option? I looked at the open burners and I am concerned about the maintenance and daily cleaning. It looks like it would be too much for me especially with a little kid. Thx for the tip on appliance stores. I went to a local one today and will try to buy local 🙏

Leaning towards thermador or wolf rangetop….. not sure on the wall oven and speed oven choice yet. It’s so hard. The reviews vary so much!!!
