Exterior color help!!!

last modified: 3 years ago

We are in the process of building a house and the exterior is SW Peppercorn with white trim. The garage will also be painted peppercorn, its just not done yet.

The front door was planned to be stained black but ended up a dark walnut. we are in a design dilemma with how to make the front look better. Should the trim also be peppercorn, or a brown to match the door, or is white ok, or paint the door black?

Any advice would be helpful.

I might go darker with the garage doors and paint them black. Same with the front door. Personally, I find the white trim a bit too stark a contrast and might go black with those, too.

Agree the white looks stark. I also think the front door is somewhat lost with a dark color. It needs more focus.

There seem to be two problems. Your house is a reproduction Prairie style. The support columns are styled as Craftsman as is the front door.

    Example:

Wondering if the beachy stone could be removed and just have plain columns, painted the color of the house.

I don't know what to advise on the front door. You must have paid a fair amount for it, but you can see how it doesn't work with the garage doors. S W recommends

    as a coordinate with Peppercorn.

You could try that and paint the garage doors Peppercorn, but in semi-gloss finish.

Too much white. I'd remove all the stone and rethink the columns. Probably need just two, one on the far left and one left of the front door. Make them simple.

Not suggesting these colors, just showing how darker colors would work for the trim.

Paint the horizontal band splitting the 2nd floor peppercorn so it blends in.

Consider a new front door. As said above, it's the wrong style for the house, and paint it a brighter color.

Wow, so many great suggestions. i was afraid that this was too much contrast. the garage is getting painted peppercon exactly like paul f edited.

The top of the columns are supposed to be white stucco. We could ask the builder ti leave them Peppercorn and then paint the white horizontal lines peppercorn to lessen the white.

The stacked stone columns are not an option at this point to be replaced. 😕 huge expense. Supposed to close in 2 weeks. trying to figure out what to do immediately with the front door to make it work.

    so confused.

Here is what it looked like before they painted the trim white.

I like the brown door and the black or peppercorn trim.
    Beautiful!!

I agree. I think the stone will look nicer if there was not so much white elsewhere making it look busy.

Can the stucco be painted or do we have to do new stucco in peppercorn for the trim? At this point we will have to do it ourselves.

The door doesn’t bother me, but those ridiculous floating pillars look like those giant fur boots from a few years ago. I wouldn’t care what it cost, they would have to go.

Thanks Rachel Lee. Maybe from the view of the pictures it looks like the columns are floating but they are holding up the upstairs and the huge front porch.

Our thought on those is to eventually add wood above the white portion.

The one thing that bothers me is that the two pillars at the front door appear too close together and totally take the focus off where the entry is. I'm sure landscaping will help with that but maybe those two pillars need to be lowered to focus the eye to the entry. I was just playing around with what could be done with the stripes on top.

I like the paint and the door. Something needs to be done at the foot of the columns. I like white trim around the door. As for making the front look better, it will look magically better with grass, a few shrubs and no port-a-potty.

Met with the builder today, they are going to try some options remove the white horizontal lines with peppercorn.

I’m thinking that since this is a east facing house, it might be nice for the 2 porch walls to be painted lighter so the porch is not so dark. Might help the white stone not looking so stark. Something lighter that compliments peppercorn.

I like the trim on the second floor, What I don't like is the stark white against the peppercorn. The recommended S W White flour would be so much better...get away for the beachy stuff going on.
