Kitchen Update Ideas?

last modified: 3 years ago

Mostly paint and small changes - possibly the hood. Sorry my post kept deleting. Most likely leaving the wood panels in family room unpainted.

Looking for color ideas, keeping the granite slab counters they are a grey with pinkish tones. Should we paint island diff color? Built in hutch? Or leave it wood?

Is there any way you can afford to reface rather than simply repaint your kitchen cabinets? While paint will certainly help brighten the space, you'll still be left with a dated door style. Is the detail on the doors routed or raised? It looks raised in the last photo, but if it's routed you might be able to DIY a wide-rail Shaker door by adding molding before you paint.

You seem to have a lot of space, which is great, but the hood is currently dominating the room. Removing it would make a huge difference.

Can you post a close-up of the countertop and the backsplash? Getting a better look at the colors in those elements would help with paint color suggestions. Currently you seem to have a mix of cool (bluish gray in the backsplash and countertop) and warm (brown cabinets and almond refrigerator), so choosing one palette would be a good place to start.

Small changes. Paint the hood black, to match the appliances. Replace the refrigerator, which looks older with a black one, so all appliances match, and change the hardware on the cabinets. Paint the walls. Those are the least expensive things.

The layout with cooktop on its own island with no other counterspace is astoundingly bad and seems pretty dangerous. If you post detailed dimensions of the room you will get good suggestions for rearranging the space.

If you paint the hood you may as well paint the refrigerator rather than toss a functioning appliance into the landfill. If the ovens are getting older-paint the dishwasher and wait for the ovens to need replacing.

That looks like several cabinets to have painted. An amount that will not be a small expense if done right. Are these real estate listing photos, you are just buying the house? So, what you may hear from several is move in, live there several months, then decide what you can and cannot live with and what would suit your lifestyle better if you made some changes. That's not the best planned kitchen now but it doesn't look cheaply done or particularly worn.

A longer range plan sometimes works better. The few pics we've seen indicate quite a bit of wood in the house. You'll want to somehow tie your kitchen to the rest of the house vibe, not have it looking like it arrived from a different planet on its own ;) All cohesive, thought out, and while not all the same color at least similar pallet. It's a lot to consider all at once and under the stress of relocating into a new home.

But then, I move cautiously, hate nothing more than doing something twice because I made a too quick decision. Best of luck to you! You seem to have a spacious kitchen with a lot of storage and that's important.

I wouldn't sink any money into this kitchen other than to figure out how to get that cook top off of the mini-island.

Wow thanks to the couple of helpful comments ive seen worse - ie awful kitchens posted with friendly and helpful suggestions on improving a space its going to be a rental and weve been told by more than one property manager to paint Painting is not cheap but its also not terribly expensive the counters and backsplash as well as all the appliances are like new I agree the layout and tiny island are kinda silly but I did not design it

    Rental? Off White paint.

If it's going to be a rental, I would especially want to lose that island cooktop - I would worry about it being a liability in some way, I'm not sure that would meet code? I would do a basic range on the run of counter and make the spot where the wall ovens are to be a pantry or something like that.

@snappity Definitely no code violations with the island LOL.

As far as dimensions the kitchen area is about 12x16.

The house has been inspected and we have had several contractors in, that would have definitely been mentioned. We are going to paint, and it will look better. It is going to be done the right way, sanded, primed and painted, by a professional. We are getting the entire house done for a great price so its not a ton of money. Eventually we will remodel the kitchen but theres no sense in doing anything beyond paint - moving appliances, buying a new range etc - that is all thousands of dollars. Vs about $1K to paint the cabinets and walls.

@HU-608763110 I dont know where you live but it is definitely not $10K to have cabinets painted well here. That includes removing the doors and sanding, he is doing our entire house so maybe its more than that, but for an entire house including cabinetry/vanities and materials around $4500. Its a temporary solution and they are using enamel paint so I think it should be ok. We need it to look nicer and better than currently, photgraph well and rent it out and then live in it for a period of time.

@Alyssa Fernandez this is a close up of the granite, I asked my husband to send a pic, not the best! backsplash is off white/beige colors. The bottom line is we are spending about $8-10K on the entire house to paint, remove wallpaper and old window coverings, re-do some floors, lighting etc. We upgraded electrical panel, made some repairs. The cabinets do have a raised panel. Everything adds up quickly cost wise as you know! We are going to rent it out for 6 mos - 1 year and it will rent out faster and at a higher monthly than if we did nothing, so the costs are worth it especially since a lot of it is general things that need to be done and will not be changed or torn out when we remodel - such as flooring and paint.

@Addition when we remodel the kitchen we will be making those types of changes but taking out the island or redoing floors/tile etc buying new appliances - all of that is in the thousands of dollars.

In the future we will def remove the island and some built ins (which are behind the refrigerator) and do a bar seating/countertop area open to the family room with a sink. We will also do a small walk in pantry prob where the double ovens are and a range/hood against the back wall. Refrigerator will possibly be where the current angled sink area is.

If it’s going to be a rental I would not invest in painting those cabinets- I’d paint the walls and let tenants add more miles to the cabinets and save your money for the renovation you want to do when you take it over.

@User I know it will not last forever and will need touch ups but I think painting them for the time being is the best option. I see a TON of people DIY paint their cabinets and it looks good. I know what we are getting. I would never spend $7K to paint these when they are just getting replaced in a year or two.

@HU-608763110 LOL its not a burn hazard - it is a flat surface cooktop - when I cook at my current range I use the empy burners to move a pot to. Don't use my counters. and the kitchen won't be destroyed. We are not using a cheap uninsured hack either. I guess it is hard to read and comprehend our actual process and plan without jumping to a gut reaction. It is the internet afterall.
