Yes, don't the wall color in a warm white or light beige that echos the floor, if nothing else changes, will be best.

Your cabinets appear to be in good shape. Wood cabinets are regaining in popularity because they function well in busy households. You said your style is rustic farmhouse, so I think the oak cabinets are great for that look. I think your new countertops are fresh and give you lots of options for paint colors. Try the Sherwin Williams shop near you. They give great advice. You can buy stick on paint color sheets that allow you to see the color in your house in different rooms and at different times of day. Or you can buy samples for less than $10. When you are ready to buy the paint, wait for the 40% off sale and $10 coupon. I am always trying to save money, but I have learned the hard way not to buy cheap paint. Enjoy the process. (And I would google how to remove the Briwax from that panel. I think your cabinet color is fine the way it is.)

Paint the cabinets white in semi-gloss. Definitely use B.M. Advance paint. It makes painting cabinets so easy. If you aren't a talented painter, remove the hardware and just paint the exterior and leave the wood interior. The old black hardware should work well. Paint the walls the same white but in an eggshell finish. Paint the back door black. Add a colorful washable rug into the mix.

I'm betting B.M. OC 151 will work for your white. You can buy it ready mix right off the shelf. .

I like wood cabinets with warm white walls. Oak is classic farmhouse style without being too trendy. Paint the walls a white and see if that isnot enough for you. I used BM pure white in my dark oak kitchen and i love it now.

Patricia, the kitchen layout and lighting was that way when we purchased the home. We got new laminate countertops because the sink was clear over by the door and had no counter to the left for 20 yrs.  Our house is on slab. Rearranging location of appliances was not in our budget. 

We live on a modest income.

I debated at the time on those countertops or ones that looked like marble.

We have considered painting the cabinets and thought about pot lights.

This part of our home is 100 yrs old.

i think I'd spend the funds on a stainless hood / some rattan or other solar shades and leave well enough alone. A different fixture other than the fan/light would be good but not sure you want to get into lighting. Beadboard would be your best backsplash . here are some nice rattan/ or textural natural looking shades...nice w the oak.

I like your new counters. The edging is really nice and the tones work well with the wood! I love a proper table in a kitchen like you have too. Quintessential real Farm house not faux modern farm house. I find your window treatments sweet too and reminiscent of a simpler time.

I too have an oak kitchen in a hundred year old home and although it is not on trend it works well and brings me joy and I hate the idea of throwing away working cabinets just because they are dated so i put marble on my old cabinets thinking it would help the look of my kitchen for a a few years until I could do a gut but that was 17 years ago and these cabinets are still holding strong.

I like the wood cabinets. While warm white is pretty with the wood my concern would be finding one that played well with the appliances and counter top whites. How about a shade of warm yellow, deep cream or a sage green?

Maybe go to Sherwin Williams and look at their samplize sheets of whites. Get a sheet in Pure White, and lay the other samples of white next to it so you can see the shade difference easier. If you're okay with painting the kitchen white, you'll want to strike a balance with the floor and counters with the wall white. I would keep the cabinets as is, maybe get some Old English and give them a good coat and shine, and take all the knobs and pulls off, and spray paint a nice matte black sheen to update. A couple pretty runner rugs with interest you might like in your space. Good luck!

I agree with a sagey- grayed down, soft green. You may enjoy adding a rug that perhaps picks up the new wall color, whatever you choose. I love your wood cabinets and I'm a big, big fan of laminate counters. Good choice!

I love ideas! Rugs can't happen to much now. My husband has Parkinson's disease (progressed) he uses a walker and sometimes wheelchair.

Our  son is 23 and has autism and Speech  apraxia, but sweet and very helpful ❤

Our daughter is in college. 

We have done many renovations to this house but in a small community where it doesn't gain as much value. So we do things a little at a time. 

I'm glad other people like it. Yes the negative people can get in your head, but it just takes one encourager to lift your spirits! 

I do have some greige paint, and bone color paint. Would you recommend semi gloss?  I can check on the green color.

Nice new counter and sink. I think it makes most sense, especially when working with a tighter budget, to do things in steps and see if each step is enough of a change and whether or not you need to do more. I'd paint the walls white, something that coordinates with the white tones in the countertop. Then if you really feel you want to paint the cabinets go for it. But I think they are pretty and if you like them too that is what matters!

I would paint around the door frame as well with the same color as the wall. I'd try cafe curtains instead of covering up the whole window so it feels a bit more open. You are lucky to have a kitchen large enough for a table. Instant counterspace!

What a cute house! It looks like it should be in a t v series.

Is that a piece of your new counter leaning against the brick? If so, it actually has more tans/ warm tones in it than the first picture showed. Looks nice with the brick and the oak. I think the bone paint you have would probably look nice, as well as black accents. Painting the back door black is a great idea.

Here are my suggestions based on the first photos you posted, I'll now take a look at the new ones to see how it would coordinate with what I've done...

For an updated fresh newer look:

- A very pale warm gray for the walls in a matte finish

- Your ceiling seems to be white

- A black back door with white frame as well as a white frame on the window

- Replace the fan with a semi-flush fixture

Suggestions:

- Install a bulleting board on the brick wall and move all photos, etc. from the fridge to board.

- Paint all interior doors and frames white to contrast with all the brick and wood in the room

- I'm sure you're very busy with your family but this is a great opportunity to take time to declutter the room to make it more inviting and pleasant to be in.
