Please Help With Slow-Drying Gel Stain

yesterday
last modified: yesterday

Five years ago, we had our entryway stairs and railing professionally stained with Old Masters gel stain in Espresso. At the time, it only took eight hours to dry with the help of fans.

About 6 inches of the top railing wears off every year because my young grandkids hold onto it when they walk down the stairs. When I’ve touched it up, I’ve cleaned and sanded it, then either used cut brushes (as the painter advised me) or rags (wiping it down with a clean rag after 5 minutes of letting the stain soak in). Either way, it has taken 4 days to fully dry, even with fans blowing directly on it. I’ve tried using “fast dry” Old Masters gel stain, but it provided little coverage. Before I try to locate the painter again, I would really appreciate any advice you can give me that will shorten the drying time.
