2345 lumens is a lot. You need to see the throw to see the affect it has bumping into the roof overhang. A light with just downlight would be easier to manage with a dimmer. You could light the facade with ground positioned landscape lighting. I don't see this as a choice for the eaves along the sides.

I would say with a stone "shelf" sticking out about 8"-12" below the downlight, that particular selection of a long downlight would not be the best choice. I would expect the coach house lighting to be the same as the main house. But the scale is right.

The recessed lights in the side eaves will be a challenge not to look like a spaceship with short overhangs. And what exactly would those lights be showcasing with really long blank walls on both sides.

The driveway runs beside the carriage house as you head to the main house. That is why I want recessed lighting in the eaves to help light the area as people are coming and going. The entire building is 24’ tall so I feel I need a fairly large light. It is also 58’ away from the road so there isn’t any other light in the area. I thought I he extra lumens would be good particularly because it had a dimmer. It would allow me to find the most suitable amount of light for the space.

I try to look at the big picture and work in from there. What does the main house look like? How will the main house and the coach house relate to each other?

Check to see if you need dark-sky compliant lighting.

I am not sure what dark sky compliant lighting is? If this is a type of bylaw perhaps I live in a small rural town and there are no lighting requirements.

The main house is going to be constructed after the carriage house is built. The designer tied the two building designs together. What I use on the front of this garage I plan to incorporate a smaller version on the main house garage. I totally agree that the two have to work together.

4" pot lights for the side eaves spaced based on what you want illuminated should work with the right fixtures. Products – DMF Lighting They have the options necessary to aim focus and set the lumen output.

I'm not a fan of exterior "pot" lights, which are best used indoors for task lighting. Exterior lighting is for lighting walkways and for outdoor ambiance. For that reason I'd stick with wall-mounted or post-mounted exterior lighting.

We have pot lights in our exterior eves and lights like Beverly shared. I really love them. Our garage lights are on the same switch as the pot lights for the eaves and that was a bad decision. I wish they were on their own.

Can your designer help you with a rendering or two?

And something that is less about look at how tall I am.

When I selected the lighting for my detached garage, I was more concerned about where I was stepping than where the garage wall was.

Beverly shared no pictures of houses with soffit lighting. What happens in a short overhang is you get very prominent hot spots on the wall that looks like a spaceship, like the picture that PPF shared.

What about some up lighting at the base of the side wall instead? Maybe three? The wall is 44' in length and has an entrance door to the far end.

Beverly shared lights like we have. In addition to those lights we do have lights in soffits. I never said she shared lights in soffits or eaves.

Here are our lights and soffit lights. I will say at the side of the house where the soffit is much higher we have a motion controlled light that goes on as needed and then solar lights along the path.
