The first perennial that comes to mind is Astilboides tabularis - I tend to cut off the flowerstalks on those as I grow them for the big leaves. ’Wolf Eyes’ Cornus kousa dogwood trees have yet to bloom for me but it doesn’t matter because the variegated green and white leaves are so showy on their own in both regular growth and Fall colour. It’ll be interesting to read whar other plants fit on this list!

I also have a hydrangea with the blue/pink flowers that is hit or miss, but the foliage is so nice, it's just a bonus in the years that it does decide to flower.

Ay caramba @violetsnapdragon! You are much more 'forgiving' than I. I ditched all our mophead macs years back (except those in containers).

One perennial that I do grow and flowers just beautifully BUT I would probably keep it even if it didn't flower is Shockwave Phlox. The foliage is stunning especially in June.

Oh, lots -- here's a handful:

* Lamb's ear (FYI -- "Helene von Stein" rarely flowers)

Foliage is an extremely important part of garden design. Some of the best advice I ever got was many, many years ago when I was just getting into gardening --> if you don't like what it looks like when it's not in flower, don't grow it.

I'll add Aralia 'Sun King' to the list!

I have a long list :-) Foliage is extremely important to me, probably much more so than flowers as they tend to be quite fleeting for the most part, so there are a lot of shrubs or dwarf conifers on my list. But since this is in the Perennials forum, I'll restrict to those.

• Hostas and heucheras - I am known to remove any flower stalks as to my mind, they distract rather than enhance.
• Haloragis erecta 'Wellington Bronze'
• Hebes
• Farfugium
• Saxifraga x urbium 'Variegata'
• Lamium
• Campanula 'Dickson's Gold'

I'm sure there's more....just can't bring them to mind at the moment.

I love ferns of any kind.

Asarum splendens is slowly spreading to form a neatly rounded clump.

Bear's breeches died. I'm not taking that personally.

Arum Italicum is showing new foliage; I admired it in somebody else's garden last week. It's listed as invasive in Maryland so I don't grow it myself.

Artemesia Powis Castle blends well in hot, dry spaces.

I have a variegated Stellar Pink dogwood which has yet to flower. I planted it 4 or 5 years ago and it has grown from 5 feet to 10 feet. The foliage is quite lovely and fresh looking in the heat of summer and turns awesome pink in fall. If it ever flowers it will truly give three seasons of interest.

Acanthus was the first to come to mind. Also Yucca color guard. I don’t love the blooms.

varigated Solomon’s Seal is another - though I do like the flower, it’s not the main attraction.

All the posts list plants with wonderful foliage.

But I was thinking from @violetsnapdragon original post that "we" were looking for a smaller subset of plants i.e. plants known for superb foliage BUT also have wonderful flowers. For example Stachys monieri Hummelo. I so love the leaves but of course the flowers are very attractive too.

Probably because I am in such a cold zone I appreciate the rather tropical looking foliage of Crocosmia. The fact that they are lovely in bloom and hummingbirds love them adds to their charm.

Filipendula u. Variegata & Filipendula Red Umbrellas have wonderful foliage. Apart from anything else listed I am sure I am forgetting a few.

Podophyllum and Darmera peltata are two of my favs.

I, too, love peony foliage. I, too, can't keep Bear's Breeches alive! And ligularia--love the foliage, but am not a fan of gold flowers.

In northern Virginia (without irrigation), my peony foliage looks crappy by August. Peonies are a plant I definitely would not include in this list LOL. Location, location, location.

In my climate P lutea is almost all about the foliage since the flowers only last 5 minutes.

Hands down it’s brunnera for me, especially the silver foliage Jack Frost variants.
