Tile backsplash removal in kitchen

Hi hive mind! My husband has begun the nasty job of attempting to remove our hideous backsplash in the kitchen. With dremel and shop vac in hand he is removing the grout but tiles are still adhering to the wall such that they are peeling off all drywall paper and even much of the plaster in areas. Is this a lost cause? Should we just plan on removing tile and drywall and start from scratch?

We were lucky that only glue was used to adhere our old tiles. They practicallty popped off on their own. We still had to do a little patching and then a skim coat over before tiling. I think it would be much easier to remove the drywall, plus then you have good access for wiring.

I'd have the tile hammered out and the drywall replaced by the time your husband got his 8th tile Dremelled.
