Split level flooring design?

Our split level home is all carpet except the entryway and bathrooms are stone and the kitchen is a laminate. The stairs up and down are both carpet. We are wanting to redo the downstairs in vinyl planking but have no clue what to do with the stairs? Do we leave them carpet, or just change the ones got down to wood, or change both sets to wood even though upstairs would still be carpet? I don't have any design sense at all, so any tips would be appreciated. They are short staircases, like only 6 or so steps, so I'm not sure if that would just be too many transitions or what.

I would leave the stairs carpeted, or at least a carpet runner. It makes the steps much safer.

We recently finished a staircase project changing from carpet to wood treads (red oak), new railings,e tc. We did put a stair runner. Not only is it safer, it's beautiful. like the jewelry to go with a nice outfit.

In my Dad's house, he went back with new carpet on his split level stairs. That was the best choice for him and it looks very nice bc it's new and clean and a better quality carpet than what he had.

Just my opinion, but I don't care for wood stairs with no runner; always looks like something is missing to me.
