New house, same layout confusion

Some of you may remember lots of these furnishings. About a year ot two ago, you solved my layout problems in Minneapolis. We have just moved to Greenville, SC. (Not originally our plan, but our son moved here with our 3 little boys).

Again, I am doomed with a small living area connected to a dining/kitchen space.

I would be crying over the hopelessness of fitting any more seating in here, but I know you guys are genius. Can you please help me again?

I would really love to fit a glider/recliner chair in here.I have seen small ones - could that work? And would I also need a second chair? Do the two need to match, since it's such a small space?

Of course, I also have lots of artwork to hang and am looking forward to that part especially!

Thank you for any guidance anyone can give!!

Here's the whole floor plan, with measurements:

@MJD232 Wow, that post is really helpful! I still prefer the pinks especially the second one next to the panels on the top row.

@gingerrg I'm in agreement about the green. It can look "too green" and I absolutely love that color. I have two teal/greenish new rugs in my own house - but I don't have gorgeous green chinoiserie panels.

MJD, I’m so glad you’ve taken my rug selection so seriously! Thank you; you’ve given me so much to consider.
RedRyder, can you remind me where that second rug is from?

Ginger have you thought about only a pretty rug good quality at the door and leaving the wood floor open down the hallway?…..Long hallways to bedrooms usually need a rug because of the high traffic but will this hallway need one? just something to think about.

I swear I wasn’t looking for a rug for you but dang fate interveined and I saw this one. You would need 2 but poly and great price.

It’s 30” wide x 7.6” long. Here is rough Quick Look.

Of course, color would have to work and we can know from pictures. If you decide to try, get 2 because you might not get match later.

Seems like lots of options. Here is the link that has both the first and second rugs next to the photo of the panel in the first row. Think it should come up on the US site with the US price.

Ginger, Here is one that has a hint of pink, green & blue. I can't figure out how to copy it to here, but it is: Alexander Home Bella Distressed Oriental Area Rug - 2'-6" x 12'

    https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/Home-Garden/Alexander-Home-Bella-Distressed-Oriental-Area-Rug/35180624/product.html?option=67373291&recalg=995%2C988&recset=17aa7e2d-aac2-465a-b28e-17ec1003701b&refccid=SKGDDA2OTEM2FZ2DXPCIP4VOIM&recguid=1ae3d9f9-2cfc-4b0d-a6dc-90b422d09a69&recidx=3

I did a google search of the picture, and it also shows the same pattern under different names (i.e. Loloi II Adrian collection) at different vendors, like Amazon and Kings Lane.

The Oushak runners are from Etsy. The first one I posted is from a seller named Craftsman Rugs. More options on Etsy that can be ordered 12’ long.
Here’s the first one with the size and price and seller.

All Etsy. Posting one at a time since I can’t get it to work with three.

Different look but similar. More pink all around.

    Last one.

RedRyder, could you see if you can post a picture of the Bella rug I posted in the link above, please? I hope Ginger sees it. Thanks!

Diana, yes, I can see both rugs from your post - the colors and the design are exactly what I was thinking. I tried one thin rug already, and didn't like the look down my long hallway. And someone mentioned it could be a slipping hazard. So I don't know about that part. BUt I love the look and the colors of both of them.

RedRyder, I love the colors but the designs look vaguely southwestern to me.

Flo, I love how you can accidentally shop for someone else!! Sounds a little like my last accidental art purchase. Thje only question I have about that rug is the same as DIana's - it is a flat rug and I don't think that;s the look I'm going for. If only it was super affordable to commission a rug (I know it's possible, but not for my budget!!)

Well, Julie that really is something to think about. I will lay it out today and see how it looks. I think a 5x8 would be lovely, but my hall isn't that wide. Im afraid 4x6 will look puny. But I'll lay it out and see. Thanks for thinking outside the box!

    Bella Rug:

The problem with the Bella rug is the longest runner size is 9’ and I don’t think the width is wide enough for this hallway. See below. (Hint: I take a photo of the screen with the products and just upload the whole photo on my post.)

ginger, have you looked in any stores for rugs? Not for your size but to get an idea of colors/tones with the panels. You could take your picture of the panel and go to homegoods and home depot who usually have a lot of rugs. Just a thought.

I like the idea of experimenting with a rug at just the entrance as it has the potential to transform the visual of this area by minimizing the length of the hallway while allowing the panels to take center stage. It might also make local shopping an option given the availability of a more common size. Do you have a sheet/blanket that you can fold into various sizes to try at the entrance...sometimes easier than just using tape?

    gingerrg thanked MJD232

I too think that's worth a look. Now that you added the console under the panels (which looks great), a long runner might not be needed.

Ginger, think about the pinks in runner because you have coral and orange tones in the living room. Might clash?

Lowe’s has rugs too! Not sure if any would be desirable? Lots of sales right now!

I love the idea of shopping in an actual store! I've looked in a few for runners, but for some reason didn't even think to check out the rugs in general.

Yes, I can try sizes just at the door - that would give me many mre options, I think. BIg Hope:

Many of the 3 ft wide rugs are actually measuring 2'3" or 2'6" , so maybe a 5 ft rug would be a tad smaller too. (My foyer is 57" not 60") Plus I can get a nicer rug for less, since it'll be smaller.

Good point, Flo; I tend to lump all pink tones together.

Hi Ginger, was just browsing and came across this beautiful renovated entry. May you consider no runner? Just a beautiful door rug? With new light fixtures I thought this was pretty and wanted to share :)

Maybe a round at the door? Just a new twist!

    gingerrg thanked Alice

That IS a beautiful hallway, Alice. And if I don't buy a long runner, I can use that money for pretty lights!! (I do love that one from Pottery Barn that Lisa showed quite a while back).

Fa la la la la! Lol

One good rectangle rug at the entryway and gorgeous fixers may be a relief - and a good design decision for now.

You are not finding The One for the hallway and that posted photo from Alice is quite elegant.

New lights best dollars to spend. Then shop after Christmas sales for runner etc. Practically speaking, every bit of sand, grass etc. Will show on your wood floor, so ultimately you will want a runner with a rectangle step on rug at door I believe!

A word on hallway lighting. Best to not use ones that you see big bulb from below. 3-4 light frosted candelabra style bulbs best for your hallway. Is there a dimmer on that switch? If not, put one in and then you have control of the light level you need. Just get bulbs that are “dimmable”!

Finding a rectangle for the entrance - in a color/design you like - will be easier since most styles come in good sizes for that space. Runners are hard.

If you do choose to get a smaller rug for entrance, finding a runner to go with it at a later date might be very difficult. Could further complicate the runner search.

I dont have runners on any open hallway areas..not even up stairs going to bedrooms…it is always good to have a entrance rug when stepping in to wipe your feet but I found it is much easier to clean the wood floors with out rugs to work around..and wood floors are amazing they can take so much..we wear shoes all day on our floors…and I do think that long hallways with long console and than adding a very long slender rug will only create visually a very skinny look? again something to think about..I think you could find a really beautiful wool rug with madallion and colors you like in a smaller rectangle for at the front door. Iwoukd think the area around the dining room and kitchen get alot more traffic and they are fine without rugs?

It's a good thing Christmas is almost here (creating a natural break) because now I am good and confused. :) But right now I'm leaning to just the one rug at the door. ( Again, I'm agreeing with you RedRyder) It seems not only easiest but also a way I can get the result I want. I think I was stuck on a long runner because of the smaller, puny one I had from the old house that looked so bad here. (That one is already outside the patio doors where it is totally appropriate).

I appreciate your thoughts on lighting, Flo. I'll pick up that search after Christmas, but I still have Lisa's Pottery Barn light stuck in my head!

Rugs are not slippery when wet…. Nor do they make klunking sounds when you walk on them… I think cleaning is also easier with a small vacuum and an occasional spray spot cleaner if/when needed…less work than sweeping… damp mopping… and dealing with little scratches and damage that requires re-finishing over time

    gingerrg thanked btydrvn

Lots of vendors offer tiny rugs if you want a doormat sizesample… cheap and easy to use in your home so you don’t have to return them
