Another shoe question ... Hoka?

As a runner, I'm rather intrigued by the Hoka brand. They're pricier than my regular Brooks brand, but I keep going back to look at them. (They've got a new racing shoe that's gorgeous, but it's also $250 -- yikes! I'm not an elite runner, so it would be complete overkill -- but dang, it's pretty.) I've read many positive reviews for the brand, but as with all things I understand reviews are highly subjective and each person's foot and running experience is different. I just thought I'd put the question out there since there are a couple of other shoe threads that have popped up recently. Does anyone here own a pair of Hoka sneakers and if so, what's your verdict? They're pricier than my regular Brooks brand, but I remain interested.

I have a couple of friends who love their Hokas. I'm seeing a lot of them on people who are on their feet a lot, e.g., nurses and doctors. I tried a pair and they didn't work for me, but it was only one pair.

I need a lot of cushioning and they didn't have enough for me.

I don’t wear them, but DD’s next door neighbor swears they are the only shoes she can wear.

I tried them and returned them. I tripped about 5 times wearing them, and decided it was their fault. I’ll keep my Brooks.

Oooooh ... tripping. I can do that on flat carpet in my bare feet, so that does concern me a little bit!

I know people at work said they were hot. I for sure don't need that.

I had a pair. They were okay, but not the fantastic difference I was expecting in cushioning and arch support.

I have a pair but I just don’t feel stable in them. They’re wobbly or something.

DS and his fiancee love them, and they convinced my DH to get a pair, and he loves them too.

Idk, but they are the shoe brand that I see everywhere here in Clemson and especially at the gym. OnlinOnline,. Some of them are just beautiful! But I'm not a runner so I'm not particularly tempted.

I hike and walk and also walk on the treadmill but my shoe brand of choice is Saucony.

I tried to hop on the Hoka bandwagon but none of them fit or felt good. Lots of friends rave about them, but I think they either work for your foot type/shape or not. I have a wide forefoot and narrowish heel. I'm also a runner and former Brooks devotee; I've now switched to Topo.

I'm a runner and a Brooks devotee for running. I thought I'd give the Hoka a try but I personally find the huge logo on them offputting and ugly, and the shoe itself just looks way too bulky for me.

I'm on my feet at work all day on a tile floor. I love my Brooks and my Nikes (I use Superfeet inserts). The Nikes are so lightweight and perfect for my bunions that for work, I wear them more often than my Brooks, which I mostly wear for running/walking. I'm curious about On Cloud which seem to be trendy/popular. I might give those a try next time I need sneakers.

Back when I was running a lot, our local running store would periodically have shoe demo days. You could come in for one of their evening runs and demo a pair of shoes. Hoka was fairly new at the time and several of my running friends and I decided to try them because hey it was only 3 or so miles, right? I hated them. they were so bulky to me and never felt comfortable on my foot. It was like running with a marshmallow on the bottom of my leg. Obviously YMMV. I would not buy strictly on popularity, and my favorite running shoe is never everyone else’s favorite.

I loved Asics for years but recently have been a Brooks convert. Ida, i think you know this and will go with your gut on this one. If you can return them after trying a pair, go for it. If not, go with what you know is my motto.

I have tried them a couple of times but found them uncomfortable, plus they felt and looked huge - like there is so much extra shoe all the way around the outside and they have really thick soles. I stuck woth my Brooks Ghost the last time I purchased, though they seem to have changed.

@Bluebell66 yep, the”really thick soles” thats what kept making me trip.

@4kids4us my sister has the On shoes, she’s been wearing them a few years and really like them.

I did not care for my first pair of Hokas and donated them. A year or two later I was convinced to try again but in a wide to get more room in the toe box. Fortunately the toe is wider but the heel fits and I have been wearing them for about 6 months. I alternate between those and my Brooks and have been generally favoring the Hoka recently. That said, I do not run...these are for walking and walking around. My feet have become quite persnickity as I have aged and I must wear mostly shoes with both cushioning and support. My husband has On shoes that he loves.

Thanks so much for the helpful input! I will most likely search for a brick and mortar to try them. I'm especially concerned about the possibility I might find them too bulky as several have mentioned. Having been a Brooks devotee for some time, I am used to a relatively lighter and streamlined shoe, so I'll definitely keep that in mind.
