Sorry I am not understanding the question. Waht would be the point of the Smart if you do not plan to use it?

We have Crestron switches/dimmers and they need use low voltage wiring to communicate between the switch and the centralized Crestron modules/hub in a separate closet. The buttons on that switch can the be programmed to operate any light that is wired back to the module/hub.

We've only had it fully operational for a few weeks ... still undecided if it was all worth the extra cost ... although it is nice to be able to switch on/off every single light in the house, all at once, from a single button next to my bed for emergency situations.

PCC, I believe the question is whether smart switches installed today will continue to function for dimming/on/off if the product's technology is discontinued or superseded with newer protocols/technology, and/or the specific manufacturer's connection network to support the older protocol goes offline, if that's required for them to work. As another example, my Honeywell thermostat or my mother's Lennox that must be registered to and connect through Honeywell's or Lennox's network server in order to route back to a computer, phone, tablet or other device for remote access. There's no remote access if the manufacturer's network/server goes down (or is discontinued), even if my home network/WiFi is OK.

We have Kasa smart wifi dimmers and switches throughout our house. Two months after moving in, I am still setting them up. They work just fine as ”dumb” switches.

Thanks everyone for the comments. My question is exactly what @dadoes said. I'm trying to figure out if there's any issues with installing the smart dimmers. Right now it seems from the responses and my chat w/ a nice guy at Home Depot, I'm probably ok if I get the smart dimmers. Worst case I've spent a bit more money but I have the optionality for the time being to set up my lighting as "smart".
