Rusted items can be clear coated to preserve the patina. There's a few products out there that are recommended over others to do this. Be aware that if there is flaking or debris, that needs to be removed before painting just like any other painting process. Clear coating also usually leaves the rust darker, more like rust when it is wet rather than dry rust color.
