Hi Val - can you post pix of the entire room? I’m no pro, but others here can certainly give suggestions. I agree with you that the fireplace isn’t the best look. And I usually love built ins and I’d keep yours. They are nice, but, yes, very traditional. Maybe take away some of the trim. But — Tell us about your style? Is your home traditional? Is this room open to other rooms? What colors do you like? I’m sure you’ll get some responses if you give us more information!

I would paint wall and FP. It would be the best to replace completely FP surround. You have nice ideas in your ideabooks.

What is the look you are trying to achieve? Is there furniture in the room that is staying? Post a picture of the entire room. The FP should be considered alone, it is part of the whole. Post the pictures in the comments.

Thanks everyone!! I really appreciate your input. I’m attaching a few more pics. The living room and kitchen are 1 large open space so we are redoing the kitchen also. Looking for new cabinet colors. I picked a simple and elegant light colored quartz with tiny grey veins throughout.
So I’m trying to have the kitchen and LR make sense. Does that make sense?!

Kitchen needs update too

It’s a lot of “brownish”!

Hi Val - I think your fireplace is the outlier here. It’s fussy, kinda Tuscan-y, whereas your home looks more traditional. And with your new quartz, it just won’t go at all. Maybe just remove it, if you don’t like it or don’t use it. As far as your cabinets, I’m no pro, but I’d keep the wood. I like the warmth it imparts. Put some hardware on the doors and drawers too.
