It looks to me like your TV is too high on that wall. Depending on your seating does it make sense to install a slightly wider screen to the right of the fireplace? Perhaps with the top at the level of the current mantle? That would probably entail closing off part of the opening in question. Leaving the remainder open for firewood makes sense if you use the fireplace. And yes to making the outlet more accessible.

I would close up the space, moving the electrical outlet forward. The outlet could be used for holiday decorations on your mantel.

I would not want to store firewood inside.

I personally like the rock fireplace, but if you are planning on changing it, ask yourself what you “need” from that space where the box is now. If you don’t need inside wood storage or a cabinet, then I think ptreckel’s idea is a good one: move the electrical outlet forward, insulate the space and close it off, giving yourself a clean slate for a totally revamped look.

I actually want to change out the woodburning fireplace to just gas as it has a gas starter, but the hubs wants to keep it. As for the TV, husband had surprised me with it after he installed it. Agree, that it's too high & too small.

I had considered closing up the cubbies, but thought it would look even more odd since it's so off center already. I'll have to look at some mock ups for that.
