Broken Grout between Tile and Wood

The subway tile in my kitchen borders a wooden bar and a wooden column, as pictured. The line between the tile and the wood was filled with grout, but the grout has cracked. The wooden column seems has separated from the wall. I am not sure if the column has warped, or if was not properly secured to the wall.

1. Should grout be used between the wood and tile in this case? Or should it have been a caulk?

2. How can I fix this?

It will always break and crumble. EJ171 requires that to be a flexible joint, aka, caulk. All changes of planes, and all dissimilar material joins, should be caulked, to allow for independent movement of the materials.

It's normal and nothing to worry about .

Chunk out what grout you can and caulk it. If you know the brand and color grout, see if they sell a matching caulk.

Wood expands and contracts and will move differently than walls. All change on planes should be 100% silicone caulk, never grout, for this exact reason.
