I'd either install pea gravel and square pavers for the walkway to the garage door or a charming flagstone walkway.

For the back patio, I'd consider either a pergola kit over your existing slab or a retractable awning.

How was your husband thinking of altering the roofline on the left? Was the settling issue the inside corner where the door is, or the hard angle of the roofline that does not really have gutters? Potentally a roofline change for a covered porch could help correct potential drainage issues that could be impacting settling there. You could do a covered porch the full width of that area and bring it forward to where the current walk is ripped out. Across the back you could continue on and wrap the back of the house. You could do pergolas or awnings across the back too.

@beesneeds he wants the roof to look similar to the other parts. He is an engineer and that has always bugged him about our house. I think that’s exactly what we want/should do - covered patio - even with the sidewalk/existing patio. The drainage issue was in the corner by the door. I like pergola idea right off the existing patio door. I appreciate all of the ideas!!
