i seem to recall the leaves.. when crushed.. are fragrant... i dont ever recall the flowers being fragrant ...

If one of the two North American species, the flowers ARE fragrant. A few of the popular hybrid cultivars may be less so.

I have both the native and a hybrid. The native is wonderfully fragrant but the hybrid blooms smell like vinegar.

No. And would need to be consumed in quantity to have any toxic effects on humans or livestock.

You are aware that more commonly grown garden plants have toxic properties than those that do not? Even many popular fruits and vegetables can be very toxic if you eat the wrong parts!
